Journey time savings

Making journeys quicker is an objective of most of our major enhancements.

This dashboard shows the amount of journey time saved on average and how this compares to forecast.

 Summary

Travel conditions vary throughout a typical day so we generally evaluate the impact at three key time periods:

  • morning peak
  • evening peak
  • the time in between, which we call the inter-peak period

The dashboard shows the positive impact enhancements have had on journey times in the morning and evening peak - which are the busiest periods. We observed deteriorations in journey times in the inter-peak, for typical schemes.

The full journey time savings anticipated at appraisal haven't materialised at evaluation. However, the outturn journey time savings estimated here don't account for worsening congestion that may have happened without our major enhancements. This means these estimates are conservative, and actual journey time benefits could be larger than stated.

We've addressed this in methodological improvements for more recent evaluations, but findings presented here rely on the earlier approach.

Some schemes have a complex effect on journey times, with positive impacts for some times and locations and adverse ones for others.

Vehicle hour savings consider the cumulative journey time impact for all journeys made on the route. This demonstrates that schemes had a large positive overall effect on journey times, although a smaller one than anticipated.
