Collision severity
This dashboard shows the change in personal injury collisions (PICs) by severity before and after our project.
Casualty data is categorised by injury severity – “slight”, “serious” or “fatal”.
Negative numbers mean fewer casualties and that safety has improved.
Summary
Injuries across all severities have generally reduced following our projects.
An exception is serious collisions which increased slightly for “Upgrade to Motorway” schemes.
However, this is based on a small sample of three schemes. Also, a degree of random variation is to be expected when comparing before and after.
As with total numbers of PICs, we consider changes in severity in the context of the amount of traffic. The decreases in killed or seriously injured (KSI) rates further support this positive trend. It suggests that not only are there fewer collisions, but the severity of incidents has also been reduced. This highlights the success of these projects in enhancing road safety.
