Walkers wheelers cyclists and horse riders

Supporting your active journeys

Whether you're walking, wheeling, cycling or riding a horse, we'll help you travel safely in the way you choose.

Our roads connect communities, but so do the paths, crossings and bridges alongside them.

We invest in these routes to make journeys safer and easier for everyone. This helps you reach work, school, shops and local services. It also connects you to public transport, parks and green spaces.

Between 2020 and 2025, we invested more than £80 million in active travel schemes, giving people more travel choices. We delivered this through our Designated Funds programme.

Local authorities, community groups and active travel specialists help us understand where improvements are needed most.

Our paths, cycle tracks and bridleways link up with longer-distance networks, including the National Cycle Network.

For more information about the National Cycle Network, including routes that cross our roads, visit Walk Wheel Cycle Trust.
