Summary

By its very nature, the Strategic Road Network and any changes to it impact the environment.

Before delivering a project, we assess a wide range of potential environmental impacts. Where possible, we propose mitigations to minimise negative impacts on the environment. However, we inevitably require trade-offs when reaching a final design. 

As part of our evaluation, we undertake a site visit to:

• assess environmental impacts and mitigations
• evaluate whether these were in line with expectations

Our evaluations show most outcomes (78%) are “as expected”, demonstrating we're largely accurate in our pre-scheme assessment of impacts.

“Better than expected” is positive news for those impacted by the project. However, “as expected” is the best evaluation outcome because it means decision makers based their investment decisions on accurate information.

Although we estimate the impact of our schemes on greenhouse gases at appraisal, we are currently unable to evaluate this due to methodological limitations.
