Step 3: Detailed design, grid connection and pre-construction
Grid connection application process
Some sites may require a grid upgrade to deliver EV charging. National Grid outlines the detailed process for applying for a grid connection. The grid connection process follows a clear sequence from early enquiry to final switch‑on. This is a summary of what they advise:
1 Pre-application enquiry
Early discussion with the grid operator to understand requirements and feasibility.
2 Formal application
Submit technical details and expected demand, and pay any application fees.
3 Review and assessment
The grid operator carries out studies to check grid capacity and safety impacts.
4 Connection offer
You receive terms, costs, required upgrades and delivery timescales.
5 Contract signing
Accept the offer and formalise responsibilities on a connection agreement.
6 Installation and compliance
Install equipment and pass inspections against technical and safety standards.
7 Turn-on and commissioning
The connection is energised and becomes operational.
When going through the application process, remember to:
- Have all your documents ready (including a site location plan, a site layout plan, An Energy Networks Association (ENA) EV/HP application form if you are installing electric vehicle charging and/or heat pump installations).
- Plan your upgrade costs.
- Engage your DNO early to avoid delays.
