A52 corridor
The A52 is an important route through the heart of the East Midlands. We’re investing in improvements that will make this route faster, safer and more reliable for people and businesses.
Where we're working in Nottingham
Here are our A52 improvements in and around Nottingham.
How we'll work
To work safely, we’ll need a mixture of lane and road closures. We'll also need some weekend closures.
We'll work at the least busy times of the day or week to minimise disruption.
We'll mainly work in the daytime, but we may need to work overnight when traffic volumes are at their lowest.
We’ll provide closure and diversion route information on this page.
A52 Bottesford - Safety improvements scheme and maintenance work: 25 February to 17 April 2025
We’ll be carrying out safety improvements and maintenance work on the A52 Bottesford.
Our work will include:
- improvements to signage
- retexturing the concrete carriageway to improve the roads surface
- road markings and road studs
- vegetation clearance
Once completed, road users will benefit from a safer road and smoother journeys.
Closures
To complete our work safely:
- we’ll work under full carriageway closures including slip roads and crossover points where applicable.
Diversions
There will be a fully signed diversion in place via the A46 and A1.
Access to frontages that fall directly within our closures will be maintained by an escort service which will be provided via our on-site traffic management operatives. There may be short delays whilst we ensure that the site is safe for access.
Access for the emergency services will be maintained at all times.
We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum.
We always aim to work to the programme, however un-foreseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
A52 Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) bridge repairs - Summer 2024 to Summer 2025
We’re repairing a damaged bridge on the A52 at the QMC roundabout.
As well as replacing a beam damaged by a lorry, we're diverting utilities and re-waterproofing the bridge.
We expect to complete all work by summer 2025.
Closures
Lane one of the northern bridge, between the northbound entry slip road and southbound exit slip road for the A6514 Middleton Boulevard, remains closed 24/7.
We'll also need these overnight closures (8pm to 6am) during February.
Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February and Monday 24 February to Wednesday 26 February
Full overnight closure of the northern quadrant of QMC roundabout between:
- the northbound entry slip road for Middleton Boulevard
- the top of the Middleton Boulevard southbound exit slip road
Thursday 27 and Friday 28 February
Middleton Boulevard closed overnight underneath the roundabout.
Diversions
A6514 northbound Middleton Boulevard closure diversion.
A6514 southbound Middleton Boulevard to Clifton Boulevard diversion.
A52 eastbound Priory roundabout to QMC roundabout closure diversion.
Please allow extra time for your journeys and follow the signed diversion routes.
We'll update this page with changes to traffic management as the scheme progresses.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
A52 Priory to QMC road improvement and cycleway - spring 2025 to spring 2026
We’re building a combined cycle route and footpath on the north side of A52 Derby Road. It will run between Priory roundabout and Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) roundabout.
This is part of our commitment to encourage healthy and sustainable travel along our network. It will:
- provide safer and easier access to local amenities
- enable low carbon commutes to sites like QMC and the city centre.
We'll combine this scheme with other connectivity and safety improvements on this part of Derby Road:
- new low-noise carriageway surface
- upgraded street-lighting, drainage and pedestrian lighting-controlled crossings
We'll start our works in March 2025.
Public information events
Before we start, we’re holding three public information events where you can learn more about our work from our team.
Thursday 27 February - 11am to 4pm
Wollaton Hall Clock Tower, Wollaton Hall, Nottingham NG8 2AE
(What3words – palace.mouth.ally).
Friday 28 February - 11am to 7pm
St.Barnabas Church, Derby Road, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 2SN
(What3words - charge.tour.caring.)
Saturday 1 March - 10am to 2pm
Wollaton Hall Clock Tower, Wollaton Hall, Nottingham NG8 2AE
(What3words – palace.mouth.ally).
Closures and traffic management
We'll use different traffic management phases as we work.
Most significant will be a 24/7 one way system between the two roundabouts.
We'll close the westbound carriageway for four months, followed by the eastbound carriageway for a further four months.
We'll keep access points along the A52 Derby Road between Priory roundabout and Queens Medical Centre roundabout open during most works.
There will be times when we need to close some access points for short periods, for instance during resurfacing.
A52 Nottingham junctions (Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft junctions)
In November 2024, we submitted an Order to the Secretary of State for Transport.
Once confirmed, this Order will enable the compulsory purchase of land we need to improve Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft junctions.
These improvements will increase capacity at the junctions, easing congestion and making the route safer and more reliable.

Overview
Running east-west across five counties, the A52 is an important route through the heart of the East Midlands. It is a vital connection for those who live and work in the region.
What we're doing in Nottingham
The A52 in Nottingham provides easy links to a wide range of essential services, attractions, and landmarks. It’s one of the city’s key arterial roads, ensuring direct access to major destinations across the East Midlands and beyond.
It serves as a catalyst for economic growth, supporting businesses by providing essential connections to key routes such as the A1 and M1.
These connections are crucial to the smooth and swift movement of goods and services. They enable businesses to connect with their customers more effectively.
With traffic volumes predicted to grow over the coming years, we’re investing millions of pounds in the area to:
- relieve congestion and smooth traffic flow
- improve safety and journey times
- encourage healthy and sustainable travel
- improve access to key businesses and locations
Once complete, our improvements will foster growth and development by:
- making locations more accessible and attractive for investment
- generating employment and residential development opportunities
Utility companies
Utility companies (gas, water, electricity and suchlike) often work on roads we manage. Where possible, we try to coordinate our roadworks with them to minimise disruption to motorists.
Sometimes we can't do this. For example, utility companies don't have to give advance notice when responding to emergencies (like burst water mains or gas leaks).
This means we can't always warn people about potential disruption before utility companies start working.
Utility companies are wholly responsible for telling people (like residents, motorists and local communities) about the impact of their works.

Benefits
Once complete, our improvements will foster growth and development.
They'll make locations more accessible and attractive for investment.
This will generate employment and residential development opportunities.
