East and West Midlands LED roadside lighting upgrades

We’re cutting carbon emissions in the Midlands by switching to cleaner LED lights, making our motorways and A-roads greener and more energy efficient.

We'll be upgrading the current lighting to LEDs on the A1 between Blyth and Colsterworth. The new LED lighting will be more energy efficient and require less maintenance in the future.

When will this work take place?

We’ll work overnight between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, from 8 July 2024 to 16 September 2024.

In order to carry out our work safely, we’ll close slips road, lanes and carriageways for the safety of our workforce and road users. Closures will move along the road as our work progresses.

What does this mean for you?

During closures, fully signed diversions will be in place which are shown below.

Monday 8 July (one night) – Markham Moor: Northbound exit and entry slips plus roundabout including Main Street.

Monday 29 July – 1 night – Elkesly Bridge: Northbound carriageway and Southbound lane 2.

Tuesday 30 July – 2 nights – Elkesly Bridge: Northbound carriageway and Southbound lane 2 and Dover Btm exit and entry Slips.

Monday 2 September – 4 nights – Colsterworth: Southbound carriageway and Northbound lane 2 and B6403.

Friday 6 September – 3 nights – Colsterworth: Southbound carriageway and Northbound lane 2, B6403 and A151.

Wednesday 11 September – One night – Colsterworth: Northbound carriageway and B6403

Thursday 12 September – Three nights – Colsterworth: Northbound carriageway and A151.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.    

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

We’ll be upgrading the current lighting to LEDs on the A5 between M42 junction 10 and Grendon roundabout. The new LED lighting will be more energy efficient and require less maintenance in the future.

We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 4am, from Thursday 20 June to Monday 1 July 2024. To carry out our work safely we’ll install the following traffic management:

Thursday 20 and Friday 21 June – Lane one closure on the A5 eastbound from M42 junction 10 to Dordon Roundabout. No access to New Street from the A5.

Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 June – Lane one closure on the A5 westbound from Dordon Roundabout to M42 junction 10.

Thursday 27 June – Lane one closure on the A5 eastbound and westbound from M42 junction 10 to Dordon Roundabout. No access to Long Street and Gypsy Lane from Dordon Roundabout.

Friday 28 June and Monday 1 July – Full closure of A5 eastbound and westbound from Dordon Roundabout to Grendon roundabout. Lane two closures on the A5 eastbound and westbound.

We’ll also be carrying out vegetation clearance along the A5 between Grendon roundabout and Holly Lane roundabout. This will take place between 9pm and 6am on Tuesday 2 JulyWednesday 3 July and Tuesday 9 July. During this time, we’ll install lane closures with the use of temporary traffic lights. We’ll make every effort to minimise noise at this location.

On Thursday 4 July and Friday 5 July 2024, between 9pm and 6am, we’ll be removing hazardous trees along the A5 between Holly Lane roundabout and Mancetter roundabout. To carry out this work safely, we’ll fully close the A5 eastbound between Holly Lane roundabout and Mancetter roundabout. We’ll also close the A5 westbound from Mancetter roundabout to the A5/Long Street entry slip junction.

Access for emergency vehicles and frontages will be maintained throughout.

During closures, we’ll install clearly signed diversion routes.

During our LED upgrades, we will need to access lampposts that are located next to parking bays. These lampposts will be marked with cones. In order for us to carry out our work, we would kindly request that no cars are parked next to the marked lampposts.

We’d also encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of all road users.

We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, from 3 to 24 July 2024, Monday to Friday.

In order to carry out our work safely, we’ll close the road and roundabouts to ensure the safety of our workforce and road users.

What does this mean for you?
