East and West Midlands LED roadside lighting upgrades
We’re cutting carbon emissions in the Midlands by switching to cleaner LED lights, making our motorways and A-roads greener and more energy efficient.
We've started our biggest-ever programme to replace older street lamps with LED lights that use far less energy to produce the same amount of light. The £132m investment programme aims to reduce carbon emissions by retrofitting existing, older lighting, taking the amount of environmentally friendly LED lights across the Strategic Road Network (SRN) to at least 70% by March 2027.
What are we doing in the Midlands?
We plan to install more than 3,200 LED lights in the East and West Midlands by the end of March 2023. By March 2027, we will have retrofitted most of the lighting in the region, reducing energy consumption by up to 65%.
The new LEDs also last longer, meaning less maintenance and fewer replacements on our network, minimising the disruption to our customers and local communities. They're also more efficient, can be dimmed, concentrate light where needed, and require less maintenance.
The programme forms part of National Highways’ Net zero highways plan to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, which also includes buying renewable electricity, decarbonizing travel, and planting trees. Watch the video below to find out more.
Where are we working?
We’re conducting a survey of the road network to identify areas where LED lighting can be installed or upgraded. Our work may involve replacing some roadside infrastructure and may cause lane closures during retrofitting. We'll always aim to keep disruption to a minimum when carrying out work on the roads we manage.

We're upgrading street lighting on the A483 in Pant as part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. We're also replacing the cabling which will make any future maintenance of the lighting quicker and easier.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have further work to carry out at this location. We’ll now work from 22 November 2023 to 4 January 2024
To maintain safety and reduce disruption, we’ll need to close the A483 as shown below:
These closures will be in place as follows:
- Wednesday 22 November 2023, 8pm to 4am
- Thursday 23 November 2023, 8pm to 4am
- Friday 24 November 2023, 8pm to 4am
There may be some additional noise during this time, however this will take place at the beginning of the shift on Wednesday and Thursday.
During closures, the following fully signed diversion route will be in place. Southbound traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse.
The remaining work will take place under temporary traffic lights which will move along the road as our work progresses. These will be in place between 2 December 2023 and 4 January 2024, between 10:30am and 3pm. There will be no traffic management in place over the Christmas period. Our temporary traffic lights will be in place on the following dates:
- 2 and 3 December
- 7 to 13 December, Monday to Friday
- 14 and 15 December
- 18 and 19 December
- 3 and 4 January
During our programme of work, we’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
The A14 in Kettering, Northamptonshire is one of the first routes in The Midlands to benefit from this programme. We plan to upgrade the lights between junctions 7 and 9 as part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
To carry out this work as efficiently as we can, we'll be working at night between 8pm and 5am from 30 May until the end of August, Monday to Friday.
To maintain safety and reduce disruption, most of our work will be delivered under lane closures which will reduce the A14 to single lane running. These will move along the road as our work progresses.
There will be some slip road closures and the diversion will be to continue along the A14 to the following junction and return along the opposite side of the A14.
Our planned work may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
We’ll be upgrading the current lighting to LEDs on the A46, starting at the Winthorpe Interchange between Newark and Lincoln. We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, from 23 October 2023 for approximately 3 months, Monday to Friday.
To maintain a safe environment for our workforce, most of our work will be delivered under full carriageway and slip road closures. These will move along the road as our work progresses.
The diversion will be via the A17 and A15.
During our programme of work, we’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum.
