New mobile technology capable of automatically detecting motorists who fail to wear a seatbelt or hold mobile phones at the wheel is being trialled in the UK for the first time under plans to boost road safety.

We’ve made improvements on the M4 between junctions 3 and 12 by adding an additional lane for traffic to help increase capacity and reduce congestion. We’ve also put in place new technology to smooth traffic flows and manage incidents along this stretch.

Our work includes replacing the safety barrier and road signs, resurfacing, repainting road markings, replacing road studs (cat's eyes) and other routine maintenance activities.

We have listened to drivers' concerns about being able to find a safe place to stop in an emergency on all lane running smart motorways. We have been developing a programme to create additional emergency areas on sections of all lane running motorway across the country.

Operational technology is specifically used to operate and enable maintenance of the strategic road network and can be found at the roadside and in National Highways' regional operations centres.

By reporting accidents, we learn what causes them and how to prevent them. This helps everybody stay safe when using or working on our roads.

We're upgrading M25 junction 10 along with the A245, Painshill roundabout and Seven Hills Road junction. These improvements will create faster, safer journeys on the A3 northbound between the M25 and Painshill roundabout.
