    Weekend bridge works complete

We safely and successfully replaced the bridge expansion joint between Friday 13 and Monday 16 September. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we undertook this essential work, which required a full weekend closure of the link road.

The new expansion joint will help to keep the bridge safe and reliable for the tens-of-thousands of vehicle journeys it carries daily for years to come.

We’ll need a few overnight closures (10pm to 6am) in October to complete some of the smaller remaining works and do our final safety checks.

You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England site. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network. Please remember that closures can change at short notice.

M4 junction 4b to M25 link road full weekend closure - Friday 13 to Monday 16 September 2024

We need to close the link road connecting the M4 eastbound to the M25 southbound (anticlockwise towards the M3, M23 and M20) from Friday 13 September 11pm to Monday 16 September 5.30am.

For safety reasons, we will also close the eastbound entry slip road at the M4 junction 5 Langley Interchange over the same weekend.

The link road which connects the M4 eastbound to the M25 northbound (clockwise towards the M40, M1 and M11), will remain open over the weekend.

Our work has been scheduled over a weekend to avoid peak midweek traffic demand.

However, we’re expecting the M4 between junctions 5, 4b, and 4 to be busier than usual at times over the weekend.

Please plan ahead and allow more time for travel.

Project information

Overview

The expansion joint runs across the width of the bridge and weighs approximately 4.5 tonnes. It is reaching the end of its serviceable life. We need to replace the bearing in a single, extended shift before the bridge can be safely reopened.

We've co-ordinated this closure with the major upgrades already underway on the M25.

Replacing the expansion joint will make the bridge structure safe and extend its lifespan.

Our work will also reduce the need for disruptive emergency repairs in the future.
