We need to repair a bridge between M23 junction 10a, Crawley, and junction 11, Pease Pottage.

The work will include replacing the bearings underneath the bridge and replacing the expansion joints in the carriageway and verges. These joints allow for the continuous flow of traffic across the bridge and the expansion and contraction of the bridge decks, caused by the weather’s temperature variations.

Most of the work can be done with narrow lanes, a hard shoulder closure and 40mph limit near the bridge. However, we will also need overnight road carriageway closures, 8pm to 6am.

M23 between junctions 10, Crawley/Copthorne, to junction 11, Pease Pottage overnight closures:

  • Monday 17 March and Tuesday 18 March - Northbound closure for two nights, 8pm to 6am
  • Wednesday 19 March and Thursday 20 March - Southbound closure for two nights, 8pm to 6am
  • Friday 28 March, Saturday 29 March and Sunday 30 March (three nights) - full closure in both directions, 8pm to 6am

There will also be overnight closures during weekends throughout May to August. We'll update this page with the details once confirmed.

There will also be full closure in both directions, 8pm Sunday 5 October to 6am Monday 6 October.

Overnight closures, either southbound or northbound, Monday 6 October to Friday 17 October: details to follow.

Diversions

For the southbound diversion:

  • exit at junction 10
  • get onto the A2011 Crawley Avenue
  • onto Brighton Road
  • rejoin at Junction 11

For the northbound diversion, use the same as above but in reverse order.

Overview

This is essential resurfacing work and also includes maintenance, such as gulley cleaning for better drainage and litter picking.

The bridge repairs will include replacing the bearings underneath the structure and replacing the expansion joints in the carriageway and verges. These joints allow for the continuous flow of traffic across the bridge and the expansion and contraction of the bridge decks, caused by the weather’s temperature variations. This work will increase the bridge’s lifespan.
