Project information
Overview
National Highways is carrying out essential refurbishment works at the Pease Pottage Interchange South, part of Junction 11 on the M23 near Crawley.
The work will begin on 5 June 2026 and is scheduled for completion by 29 June 2026.
Without this work, the structure would continue to deteriorate, posing a risk to the long-term safety and reliability of this busy interchange. .
Both expansion joints have failed and aren't safe. Replacing them needs more work than usual because of the verge layout.
The waterproofing on the bridge deck has worn out. We're renewing it to stop water damaging the structure.
The manhole covers giving access to the bridge supports have also failed. We're cutting a new access point into the support wall so engineers can inspect and maintain them safely.
Benefits
These repairs will extend the life of the bridge and keep it safe for you to use.
Fixing the joints and waterproofing now prevents bigger, longer disruptions later. The new access point means engineers can carry out routine checks going forward.
We've timed the work for June before the summer holidays and outside the football season to keep disruption as low as possible for drivers and local residents.
