Work in June and July
A34 southbound East Ilsley safety barrier improvements - 9 June to 19 July
We start safety improvements on the A34 southbound, East Ilsley (on the West Berkshire and Oxfordshire border) on Monday 9 June.
We’re upgrading two sections of safety barrier in the southbound verge. We're also installing a new section in the gap to join the existing sections together.
We’ll work overnight (9pm to 6am). Work is scheduled to finish on Saturday 19 July.
To complete the work safely we will need:
- overnight lane closures. Two lanes will remain open in the day
- reduced speed limit of 40mph during the day, avoiding the need for narrow lanes.
- overnight southbound exit slip road closure at East Ilsley. There'll be a diversion to turn around at the next junction
- convoy working. You'll be stopped at temporary traffic lights, then escorted past works site at 10mph.
These measures mean we can avoid closing the road overnight with a long diversion.
A34 northbound weekend closures - June and July
We need to resurface sections of the A34 northbound between Beedon and West Ilsley in Berkshire.
To do this, we'll close the A34 northbound from the A34/M4 J13 Chieveley Interchange , West Berkshire to the A4185 Chilton Junction near Didcot, Oxfordshire.
We need weekend closures due to the depth of resurfacing we have to do in some sections.
Weekend closures
- 9pm Friday 27 June – 6am Monday 30 June
- 9pm Friday 4 July – 6am Monday 7 July
Diversion for motorway traffic
We apologise for the long diversion. However, it's the most suitable option for both car and HGV drivers.
From M4 Junction 13:
- travel east along M4 to Junction 8/9
- exit at junction and travel north on the A404(M)/A404
- at M40 Handy Cross roundabout take first exit onto M40 northbound
- continue on the M40 to Junction 9
- exit at Junction 9 for the A34
Unfortunately, this diversion is only suitable for those who can drive on a motorway. For example, it's not suitable for learner drivers, moped riders, and people driving agricultural vehicles.

Diversion for non-motorway traffic – unsuitable for large vehicles in some areas
From the A4, take the A338 and then the A417.

Project information
Overview
This is essential resurfacing work. If we had planned the works as overnight or week-day closures, customers would be facing a long diversion over several weeks, including peak commuter times. We have chosen weekend work as the least disruptive option overall.
Benefits
The scheme will result in smoother journeys and reduce the need for disruptive, short-term repairs.
