Bringing history to life

Purfleet Heritage Centre revamped with Community Funding

The Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre (PH&MC) in Essex, preserves local military history in an 18th-century gunpowder magazine, a building designed to safely store gunpowder in barrels.

The Grade II listed building, once part of the Purfleet Garrison, now displays British military artifacts, including items from World War I and II as well as local soldiers’ personal stories. The Centre also shares local cultural history, through hands-on exhibits and educational visits for schools and community groups.

Run by a team of dedicated volunteers, it has become a lively community hub with events, workshops, and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps Purfleet’s heritage accessible for all ages.

What was funded?

With a grant from the Lower Thames Crossing Community Fund, PH&MC Centre launched a project to upgrade its displays, improve facilities, and attract more visitors from the community. The funding made a big impact providing:

  • Community noticeboard: Military-themed noticeboard at the entrance to draw in and inform visitors.
  • Better communication: A new website and a repaired phone line, to connect more easily with the community.
  • 18th century magazine display: Recreation of an historic display with realistic barrels and vintage artifacts, blending history with safety.
  • Other improvements: A new sound system and café refurbishment are also planned.

The improvements have seen a boost in open days and group visits compared to the previous year; and schools and other groups have enjoyed the new hands-on tailored experiences. The grant is helping PH&MC create a more vibrant and inviting space for the community to explore Purfleet’s rich heritage.
