East and West Midlands LED roadside lighting upgrades
We’re cutting carbon emissions in the Midlands by switching to cleaner LED lights, making our motorways and A-roads greener and more energy efficient.
We've started our biggest-ever programme to replace older street lamps with LED lights that use far less energy to produce the same amount of light. The £132m investment programme aims to reduce carbon emissions by retrofitting existing, older lighting, taking the amount of environmentally friendly LED lights across the Strategic Road Network (SRN) to 70% by March 2027.
What are we doing in the Midlands?
We plan to install more than 3,200 LED lights in the East and West Midlands by the end of March 2023.
The new LEDs also last longer, meaning less maintenance and fewer replacements on our network, minimising the disruption to our customers and local communities. They're also more efficient, can be dimmed, concentrate light where needed, and require less maintenance.
The programme forms part of National Highways’ Net zero highways plan to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, which also includes buying renewable electricity, decarbonizing travel, and planting trees. Watch the video below to find out more.
Where are we working?
We’re conducting a survey of the road network to identify areas where LED lighting can be installed or upgraded. Our work may involve replacing some roadside infrastructure and may cause lane closures during retrofitting. We'll always aim to keep disruption to a minimum when carrying out work on the roads we manage.

We’ll be upgrading the current lighting to LEDs on the A5 between M42 junction 10 and Grendon roundabout. The new LED lighting will be more energy efficient and require less maintenance in the future.
We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 4am, from Thursday 20 June to Monday 1 July 2024. To carry out our work safely we’ll install the following traffic management:
Thursday 20 and Friday 21 June – Lane one closure on the A5 eastbound from M42 junction 10 to Dordon Roundabout. No access to New Street from the A5.
Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 June – Lane one closure on the A5 westbound from Dordon Roundabout to M42 junction 10.
Thursday 27 June – Lane one closure on the A5 eastbound and westbound from M42 junction 10 to Dordon Roundabout. No access to Long Street and Gypsy Lane from Dordon Roundabout.
Friday 28 June and Monday 1 July – Full closure of A5 eastbound and westbound from Dordon Roundabout to Grendon roundabout. Lane two closures on the A5 eastbound and westbound.
We’ll also be carrying out vegetation clearance along the A5 between Grendon roundabout and Holly Lane roundabout. This will take place between 9pm and 6am on Tuesday 2 July, Wednesday 3 July and Thursday 4 July. During this time, we’ll install lane closures with the use of temporary traffic lights. We’ll make every effort to minimise noise at this location.
Access for emergency vehicles and frontages will be maintained throughout.
During closures, we’ll install clearly signed diversion routes.
Alternative access to New Street
We'll be upgrading the current lighting to LEDs on the A5 between MIRA roundabout and Dodwells roundabout. The new LED lighting will be more energy efficient and require less maintenance in the future.
When will this work take place?
We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, from 3 to 24 July 2024, Monday to Friday.
In order to carry out our work safely, we’ll close the road and roundabouts to ensure the safety of our workforce and road users.
What does this mean for you?
During closures, fully signed diversions will be in place as follow:
Wednesday 3 July 2024 to Tuesday 9 July 2024 – Burbage Island Works
B4109 diversion
M69 Westbound exit slip diversion
M69 Eastbound exit slip diversion
M69 Southbound exit slip diversion
M69 Northbound exit slip diversion
Monday 15 July 2024 to Friday 19 July 2024
Dodwells roundabout diversion
Monday 22 July 2024 to Weds 24 July 2024
MIRA roundabout diversion
Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout.
We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
