A46 flood alleviation between Six Hills and Widmerpool

Thank you for your patience while we repaired this section of the A46 earlier this year.

We now need to improve the road’s drainage to make it safer in heavy rain.

To work safely, we need to close the road. This means diverting traffic onto roads managed by neighbouring county councils.

Both councils have been making urgent pothole repairs. To minimise disruption, we've waited for the councils to finish their work before we start.

    Closures

We need five overnight closures to carry out our drainage work:

Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November

Northbound full overnight closure (8pm to 6am) from Cossington to Widmerpool for two nights.

A diversion will be signposted along the A606 and A607, by Melton Mowbray.

Wednesday 6, Thursday 7, and Friday 8 November

Southbound full overnight closure (8pm to 6am) from Widmerpool to Station Road for three nights.

Although we’re closing a shorter section of the A46, we'll still signpost a diversion along the A606 and A607, via Melton Mowbray. This is the most suitable route agreed with our neighbouring councils.

Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England site. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.

    Our work in July

Our overnight closures of the northbound A46, between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, resumed this week.

We’ll be closing both the northbound and southbound carriageways overnight between the junctions of the A606 and A607.

We’ll then return to a regular programme of overnight closures of the northbound carriageway only.

Closures can change at short notice. Before you travel, check the latest information on our daily closures page. You can also get information from our X (formerly Twitter) account (@HighwaysEMIDS)

We’re sorry for any inconvenience and encourage you to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling.

    Phase six update

Thank you for your patience while we continue to repair the A46 carriageway between Six Hills and Widmerpool.

We have now concluded Phase 4 of our work to repair the northbound carriageway just south of the junction for Back Lane and Willoughby-on-the-Wolds.

For engineering reasons, we need to postpone work on Phase 5 and move instead to begin work on Phase 6, resurfacing 3.9km of the southbound carriageway from the A46 Melton Road junction.

    Road closures

To allow us to safely move the contraflow to the southbound carriageway, a series of overnight closures are necessary on both sides of the A46.

During the daytime, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in a southbound direction but we will have two lanes open on the northbound carriageway. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please remember that closure details can change at short notice.  For the most up-to-date information, please visit our daily closures page.

Project information

Overview

The A46 Lifecycle Extension Work (LEW) scheme between Six Hills and Widmerpool aims to improve the road surface and reduce the number of unplanned interventions required to keep both the northbound and southbound carriageways operational.

The scheme involves replacing concrete bays, reconstructing and sealing the joints between them, localised patch repairs, retexturing, resurfacing using asphalt and reinstating road markings and studs.

The scheme aims to:

  • make the road safer for all users
  • extend the life of the existing carriageway until it can be fully reconstructed
  • minimise the number of unplanned interventions required to keep the carriageway operational
