Road design guidance
This page will contain a comprehensive suite of road design guidance documents that can support you in delivering effective solutions.

At National Highways, our purpose is to connect the country, so that our nation can thrive. And that means having a road network that is safe and reliable, allowing our customers to make the journeys they need, whether for work, to see family and friends or to access the goods and services they need.
The following road design guidance documents can help you deliver effective solutions.
Guide to road safety route treatments
The guide is a recipe book for road safety design interventions; one that allows you to understand the impact of different enhancements along a route. It makes it easier to compare the benefits and determine the most appropriate solution to meet the road safety challenges you face.
It brings the requirements from a number of DMRB documents to life via dedicated pages for each type of road safety treatment, photography, a case study and is aligned with both Safe System delivery and the IRAP approach.
Wrong way driving assessment and mitigation toolkit
The toolkit provides advice to designers, highway operators and road safety engineers with options to mitigate undesirable manoeuvres that could lead to wrong way driving.
It aims to help identify locations which may be prone to wrong way driving incidents and to introduce mitigation measures to make road layouts intuitive to road users.
