Air quality and noise
It's our responsibility to improve the health and wellbeing of people near our roads
Emissions (exhaust, fumes and gases) and noise from vehicles on our roads can affect the health of people living nearby.
We support the government’s air quality plan for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the UK. We'll make sure our network complies with NO2 limits in the shortest timescale possible. We'll also explore how we can include air quality standards and reporting requirements in our supply chain vehicle contracts.
We'll reduce the number of people affected by noise on our network, to improve the quality of life for those communities living close. We'll use quieter surfacing when renewing our roads. We'll also use our Environment and Wellbeing fund to erect noise barriers and install noise insulation in people’s homes, where appropriate.
