Milestone reached on A63 Myton Bridge repairs
Significant milestone achieved in Myton Swing Bridge scheme
The refurbishment of the A63 Myton Swing Bridge in Hull has reached a key milestone as all four bearings have now been made and installed on the landmark structure.
The replacement of the bearings is an important part of the programme of repairs and renewals of the bridge, which carries the A63 over the River Hull.
Several bridge swings have been successfully undertaken to test the bridge and the new bearings and it is operating very well. Successfully completing the replacement of the bearings on this complex moving bridge in a safe and timely way is a very significant milestone in the delivery of the overall project.

In November, we began major repairs on the structure including work on the bridge joints and bearings, renewal of waterproofing, barrier, and lighting improvements. These repairs will help to reduce the number of unplanned repairs on the bridge in the future.
To allow this to be carried out safely, a series of weekend closures have been in place since 23 June, with the final weekend closure due between Friday 28 July – Monday 31 July.
A series of weeknight closures had also been programmed. However, as most of the work has been completed during the weekends, we have so far been able to avoid putting any of the weeknight closures that were due in place.
Since we started the weekend closures, we’ve used those to bring forward some of the works planned for weeknights. We managed to increase resources to enable most of the planned weeknight works to be done during day shifts and weekend closures, so this has significantly reduced the need for weeknight closures.
This greatly helped to reduce the impact on drivers, for example people going to events on Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 July.
However, drivers in Hull are advised to be prepared for weeknight closures on the following dates:
- Monday 31 July - Friday 4 August
- Monday 7 August - Friday 11 August
While closures are in place on Myton Bridge, drivers are advised to:
- Follow the diversion signage and not Satnavs
- Stay out of box junctions to keep traffic flowing
- Consider taking the bus or train if you need to travel into the city centre and can use public transport.
- For drivers travelling from North Lincs., the closure is signed before Humber Bridge; please check the diversion for onward journeys before you travel.
Diversions
Fully signed diversions will be in place which have been agreed in advance with the local authority and police. These have been planned to consider residents and height and weight restrictions on local roads; we are aware that these routes will extend journey times, but we need to ensure that diversions are suitable for all motorway traffic.
Local traffic, eastbound – not suitable for HGVs - at Daltry Street roundabout, turn left onto Rawling Way, onto Anlaby Road, A1079 Ferensway, A165 Freetown Way, onto Holderness Road, onto Mount Pleasant and Mount Pleasant roundabout to re-join the A63/A1033.
Motorway traffic, eastbound – take the off slip for the A15 onto Wingfield Farm roundabout onto the A164, continue and join the A1079, onto A1033 Raich Carter Way, Thomas Clarkson Way, Sutton Road, Ings Road, Marfleet Lane, joining the A1033 at Marfleet roundabout.
For drivers located off A63 Clive Sullivan Way, first travel westbound and onto the A15 to join the diversion at Wingfield Farm roundabout.
Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion but in reverse.
