A1(M) northbound widening between junction 43 (Hook Moor) to 44 (Bramham)
To increase capacity and help reduce congestion, we're building an additional lane on the A1(M) northbound. We'll work from 28 March to August 2026.
We started main construction on Monday 30 March.
We expect our work to take around five months.
Traffic management and closures
While we work, we’ll close lane 1 and the hard shoulder 24/7 for around 3km.
There'll also be a 50mph speed limit through works.
We'll also need these overnight closures:
28 March and 8 to 10 April - northbound A1(M) junctions 42 and 44 and M1 junctions 46 to 48
Closed overnight (8pm–6am).
11 and 12 April - southbound A1(M) junctions 42 and 44 and M1 junctions 46 to 48
Closed overnight (8pm–6am).
During the full overnight closures, there will be a 7.5 tonne vehicle weight limit through Aberford.
Signed diversion will be in place.
We'll need more closures as we work. We'll give you more information here when we have firm details.
We can't avoid noise while we work but we’ll do all we can to minimise disruption.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
Background
We'll use some of the hard shoulder create an extra fifth lane. Widening the A1 will reduce the large number of vehicles weaving between junctions, which causes congestion in the area.
The full-width hard shoulder will still be in place, except for a 900 metre stretch. Along this 900 metres, we'll reduce the hard shoulder to a two-metre wide emergency access route.
As well as widening the A1(M) northbound, we'll install new:
- lighting
- drainage
- verge barriers
- signs
- roadside technology
We'll lay ultra-low noise surfacing across all five lanes. This will reduce impact of the new lane and help lower traffic noise in the long term.
