The Lower Thames Crossing has launched a new £1.9 million Community Fund, offering grants to support local projects that make a lasting difference for communities near the route.

Delivered by National Highways, the fund is opening ahead of construction starting later this year and will run across seven annual funding rounds during construction. Grants of up to £10,000 are available for projects that improve wellbeing, build local skills and employment, strengthen community connections and support the local environment.

The fund is open to charities, voluntary and community organisations, parish councils and social enterprises. Projects don’t need to be based in the area, but they must benefit residents living in eligible wards across Thurrock, Havering, Brentwood, Gravesham and Medway.

Shaun Pidcock, Programme Delivery Director for the Lower Thames Crossing, said: “The Lower Thames Crossing is one of the country’s most important infrastructure projects, but it’s also a local project with close neighbours. Through the Community Fund, we’re supporting the ideas and initiatives that matter most to local communities and helping to make a positive, lasting difference.”

Applications will be managed independently by Essex Community Foundation and Kent Community Foundation, with funding decisions made by independent panels that include local authority and community representatives, National Highways and the Community Foundations.

The new fund builds on a successful 2023 pilot, which awarded almost £250,000 to more than 50 local projects. These included initiatives to reduce loneliness, improve access to green spaces, support youth groups and provide equipment and facilities for community organisations across Essex, Havering, Thurrock, Gravesham and Medway.

Applications are now open and will close on 30 March.
