M1 junction 6a to junction 8 maintenance
We're doing resurfacing work on the M1 in both directions between junction 6 near St Albans to junction 8 at Hemel Hempstead, as well as the A414 link road where it joins the M1 from 20 July to October 2026at a cost of £4 million.
Planned road closures start 20 July 2026
We’ll start overnight work on Monday 20 July 2026, and will work until October 2026.
We'll be working overnight 9pm to 5am on Mondays to Fridays.
Closures and diversions
To work safely, we'll need to close the road overnight.
20 July to 21 August,- M1 southbound junction 8 to 6, and A414 eastbound, subject to weather conditions.
Diversions will be in place. Emergency vehicles will have access through the night closures with caution.
M1 diversion southbound diversion:
- traffic leaves the M1 at junction 8, following St Albans Road towards the A41
- traffic then joins the A41, going southbound, continuing onto Watford Road
- traffic then leaves the A41, and continues westbound on North Western Avenue
- traffic then continues northbound on Kingsway North Orbital Road, rejoining the M1 southbound at junction 6
A414 diversion:
- traffic leaves the A414 at junction 8, following St Albans Road eastbound towards the A41
- traffic then joins the A41, going southbound, continuing on Watford Road
- traffic then leaves the A41, and continues westbound on North Western Avenue
- traffic continues onto Kingsway North Orbital Road, then North Orbital Road where they rejoin the A414 at Park Street Roundabout

The M1 is one of the busiest motorways in the country, with this section regularly being used by 125,000 drivers every day.
It is also a key route for freight traffic, with a higher-than-average number of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).
We're doing extensive resurfacing to keep the M1 road in this location in a safe and serviceable condition.
