Project information

You can view more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the East below:

Following an incident on 1 November 2024, a culvert carrying the A1 over Billing Brook near Water Newton was badly damaged by a large vehicle.

The structure supporting the A1 southbound embankment suffered significant damage, which meant we had to close one lane on the A1 between Stibbington to Water Newton in Cambridgeshire to all vehicles, for safety reasons.

Overnight closures, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July

Over the weekend, our team will carry out preparatory work to realign the southbound carriageway, which will lead to both lanes reopening over the coming months.

Closures

  • A1 southbound between Wansford and Alwalton junction.
  • Lane one on the A1 northbound carriageway will also be closed.
  • Reduced speed limits will continue to be in place.

To minimise disruption, we’ll work overnight (9pm to 5am) on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July.

Diversion

A1 southbound diversion:

  • from Wansford Interchange take the A47 east to junction 15 (Thorpe Wood Interchange)
  • from junction 15 (Thorpe Wood Interchange), head south along Nene Parkway to Hampton roundabout
  • then join the Fletton Parkway (A1139) to junction 17 of the A1 Haddon junction,
  • before rejoining the A1 (M) south.

The carriageway will be fully reopened under a temporary speed restriction once the realignment works are complete, later this summer. Permanent repairs are set to be carried out in 2026/27.

While we work, our team remain mindful of archaeological considerations due to the proximity of a roman town which is a Historic England protected area, as well as environmental concerns due to a Site of Special Scientific Interest being close by.

We’ll work overnight (9pm to 5am) weather permitting.

Closures

While we work, we'll close the A1 northbound from Biggleswade North Roundabout to Sandy:

  • Monday 7 July
  • Thursday 10 July to Saturday 12 July,

Diversion

If you want to join the A1 northbound from the Biggleswade North Roundabout:

  • travel southbound on the A1 to junction 10 (Baldock Services)
  • From Stotfold Interchange, take the third exit onto A507
  • continue straight to Clophill Roundabout
  • take the third exit onto the A6 (Bedford Road)
  • At Elstow Interchange, take the third exit onto the A421
  • head towards the Black Cat Roundabout, where the diversion ends

If you want to rejoin the A1 southbound:

  • take the first exit at Black Cat Roundabout onto the A1 Great North Road
  • then turn around at Wyboston Roundabout
  • from here, you'll be directed along a clearly signed diversion route.

This will involve upgrading the current communication network on the M1 both northbound and southbound simultaneously. This is aimed at enhancing monitoring and safety for drivers.

We’ll work overnight (10pm to 5am) from Monday 7 July 2025 and we aim to complete by Friday 29 August 2025, weather permitting

To upgrade the communication network (installing new cables), we'll need to close parts of the road overnight.

This will include closing the hard shoulder, lane 1, and lane 2, as well as the entry and exit slip roads between junctions 6a and 10. Drivers will be directed along a clearly signed diversion route.

Testing and connecting the cables, will take place during the day, but this will only require the hard shoulder to be closed.

While we upgrade network cables, most of the work will be done under hard shoulder and lane closures, there may be short diversions at times.
