You can view more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the East below:

Following an incident on 1 November 2024, a culvert carrying the A1 over Billing Brook near Water Newton was badly damaged by a large vehicle.

The structure supporting the A1 southbound embankment has suffered significant damage, which means that we’ve had to close one lane on the A1 between Stibbington to Water Newton in Cambridgeshire to all vehicles for safety.

We have been investigating during nighttime shifts. As a result, we’ve been looking at a range of repair options, and doing everything we can with minimum disruption to the A1 whenever possible.

We also need to consider archaeological aspects due to a nearby roman town which is a Historic England protected area, and environmental concerns due to a Site of Special Scientific Interest close by.

We plan to do repair work this Summer. In the meantime, one lane will remain closed, with a 50mph speed limit in place.

We’ll work overnight (9pm to 5am) weather permitting.

Closures

While we work, we'll close the A1 northbound from Biggleswade North Roundabout to Sandy:

  • Monday 7 July
  • Thursday 10 July to Saturday 12 July,

Diversion

If you want to join the A1 northbound from the Biggleswade North Roundabout:

  • travel southbound on the A1 to junction 10 (Baldock Services)
  • From Stotfold Interchange, take the third exit onto A507
  • continue straight to Clophill Roundabout
  • take the third exit onto the A6 (Bedford Road)
  • At Elstow Interchange, take the third exit onto the A421
  • head towards the Black Cat Roundabout, where the diversion ends

If you want to rejoin the A1 southbound:

  • take the first exit at Black Cat Roundabout onto the A1 Great North Road
  • then turn around at Wyboston Roundabout
  • from here, you'll be directed along a clearly signed diversion route.
