East - Maintenance schemes

Road maintenance work taking place in the East region.

Project information

View a maintenance scheme

You can view more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the East below:

In late 2024 the culvert supporting the A1 over Billing Brook at Water Newton near Peterborough was damaged in a traffic collision.

As a result, we had to close the A1 southbound lane one over Billing Brook for safety reasons.

We need to temporarily re-align the A1 southbound so we can open two lanes for traffic while avoiding the damaged culvert

We started overnight preparations for main works from 1 September. On 12 September, we started realigning the carriageway.

We'll start repairing the damaged culvert in 2026-27.

Temporary speed limit

We'll impose a temporary 40mph speed limit:

  • while we work
  • when we re-open two narrow lanes to traffic on the temporary alignment

Work delayed

After investigating the culvert structure, we need to do more design work. Unfortunately this will delay us. We now expect to provide two lanes on the A1 southbound by the end of November.

One lane of the A1 southbound remains closed in the meantime.

When we're working, we'll need to close the A1 southbound between Wansford and Alwalton.

Closures

Saturday 8 November (9pm to 5am) and Sunday 9 November (9pm to 5am)
  • A1 southbound between Wansford and Alwalton will be fully closed overnight

Diversion

If you're travelling southbound on the A1 through Wansford:

  • exit the A1 at Wansford Interchange onto the A47
  • exit the A47 at Thorpewood Interchange onto the A1260
  • continue on the A1260 to Hampton Roundabout
  • turn right onto the A1139
  • re-join the A1/A1(M) at Fletton Parkway Interchange

Work

As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions from roadside lighting, we’ll be carrying out lighting upgrades to move from high pressure sodium lights (SON) to LED lights at various locations on the A5 between Milton Keynes and Tilsworth.

LED lights are environmentally friendly and consume significantly less energy while providing the same amount of light.

They also have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance, resulting in fewer road closures for lighting repairs and, most importantly, safer roads for everyone.

We plan to complete this work between Monday 10 November and Thursday 4 December 2025.

Closures

We'll work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather permitting.
