In late 2024 the culvert supporting the A1 over Billing Brook at Water Newton near Peterborough was damaged in a traffic collision.

As a result, we had to close the A1 southbound lane one over Billing Brook for safety reasons.

We need to temporarily re-align the A1 southbound so we can open two lanes for traffic while avoiding the damaged culvert

We'll start overnight preparations for main works from 1 September. On 12 September, we'll start realigning the carriageway. We expect this will take us seven weekends, weather permitting.

We'll start repairing the damaged culvert in 2026-27.

Temporary speed limit

We'll impose a temporary 40mph speed limit:

  • while we work
  • when we re-open two narrow lanes to traffic on the temporary alignment

Closures

We'll need to close the A1 southbound between Wansford and Alwalton while we work:

Monday 1 to Friday 12 September

Overnight lane closures (9pm - 5am) on weeknights only.

Monday 8 to Thursday 11 September - A1 southbound carriageway and A1 northbound lane 2

Closed overnight (9pm - 5am).

Friday 12 September to late October - A1 southbound carriageway and A1 northbound lane 2 weekend closures

Closed every weekend between 9pm Friday and 5am Monday.

Diversion

If you're travelling southbound on the A1 through Wansford:

  • exit the A1 at Wansford Interchange onto the A47
  • exit the A47 at Thorpewood Interchange onto the A1260
  • continue on the A1260 to Hampton Roundabout

We’re starting to upgrade technology along the M1 between junction 6a and 10, near Hemel Hempstead.

To upgrade the communication network (installing new cables), we'll need to close parts of the road overnight.

Testing and connecting the cables, will take place during the day, but this will only require the hard shoulder to be closed.
