Lighting replacement work to begin
As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions from roadside lighting, we’ll be carrying out lighting upgrades to move from high pressure sodium lights (SON) to LED lights on the A47 between Shoreboat roundabout at Tilney All Saints and Pullover Roundabout near King’s Lynn.
LED lights are environmentally friendly and consume significantly less energy while providing the same amount of light.
They also have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance, resulting in fewer road closures for lighting repairs and, most importantly, safer roads for everyone.
We'll be working from Monday 17 November 2025 to Friday 20 March 2026 (8pm to 6am), weather permitting.
Preparation work
From Monday 17 November until Friday 19 December, we'll be working between Terrington St John up to the Pullover Roundabout, near King’s Lynn.
Initially we'll remove vegetation and prepare, ahead of starting the main work.
Closures and diversions
To work safely, we'll need to close the A47 in both directions between Terrington St John and the Pullover Roundabout, near King’s Lynn.
Monday 17 November to Friday 21 November 2025
Traffic travelling eastbound towards Kings Lynn:
Traffic wishing to travel eastbound on the A47 will need to:
- exit onto the A1101 at Wisbech
- turn right onto the A17 at Long Sutton
- then return to Kings Lynn
Traffic wishing to travel westbound on the A47 will need to follow the same diversion as above, but in reverse.
Monday 24 November to Friday 19 December 2025
To work safely, we'll need to close the A47 in both directions between Terrington St John and the Pullover Roundabout, near King’s Lynn.
Westbound diversion:
- drivers should follow the A47 westbound to Hardwick Roundabout and take the A10 south towards Denver
- at Denver, turn right onto the A1122 and continue through Outwell
- from Outwell, follow the A1101 to Wisbech
- at Wisbech, re-join the A47 westbound
Eastbound diversion:
- drivers should leave the A47 at Wisbech and follow the A1101 to Outwell
- continue on the A1122 to Denver and turn left onto the A10 northbound
- follow the A10 to Hardwick Roundabout to re-join the A47 eastbound
We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum.
We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
Other work in the area
There will be work at Wisbech from Monday 24 November 2025 until Christmas.
Customers affected will receive further detail. For local residents, there will be local diversions available.
There will be no access to Pullover Roundabout or Wisbech.
There will be safety improvement work at A47 Guyhirn to Thorney New Cut from 17 November for seven nights.
The eastbound diversion route follows the:
- A16 to Sutterton Roundabout
- then turn right onto the A17 towards King's Lynn
- The westbound diversion route is the same but in reverse

Project information
Overview
We’re replacing streetlights on the A47 between Wisbech and King’s Lynn.
As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions from roadside lighting, we’re swapping our roadside lights from high pressure sodium lights to LED lights.
LED lights are environmentally friendly and consume significantly less energy while providing the same amount of light, so save electricity.
Depending on the type of bulbs we are replacing, we could reduce the energy we use for lighting by 65%.
We’ve already upgraded 73% of our streetlights in the East region.
Benefits
Road lighting makes up around half of our corporate carbon emissions.
LED lights are environmentally friendly and consume significantly less energy while providing the same amount of light, so save electricity.
They also have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance, resulting in fewer road closures for lighting repairs and, most importantly, safer roads for everyone.
LEDs have a lower failure rate than traditional lamps and require less maintenance during their whole life cycle.
And LED lights concentrate light where it's needed, meaning less light pollution.
