    Next phase to start in April

    We’re restarting the next phase of our resurfacing work on the A14 between junction 43 (Bury St Edmunds) and 47a (Woolpit) and will include resurfacing, renewal of road markings and replacing traffic signs.

    We began this work in 2024 by resurfacing the carriage including replacing traffic signs, road markings and road studs (cat's eyes) eastbound between junctions 43 and 47.

    We’ll return on Tuesday 22 April to begin the next phase in both directions which will last until August 2025. We’ll work overnight (8pm to 6am).

    To work safely, we'll need to close the A14 carriageway between junction 43 and 47a including slip roads at various locations throughout the work.

    Please remember that closure details can change at short notice.

    Diversion routes will be clearly signposted. 

    Diversion routes

    Tuesday 22 April to Tuesday 1 July - A14 westbound between junctions 47 and 44 

    If you need to travel westbound:

    • exit A14 at junction 51 (Beacon Hill)
    • travel along the A140 towards Scole
    • then along the A143 and A134
    • to rejoin the A14 at junction 43 (Bury St Edmunds) to continue your journey

    Wednesday 2 July to Thursday 7 August - A14 eastbound between junctions 44 and 47a

    If you need to travel eastbound:

    • exit A14 at junction 43 (Bury St Edmunds)
    • travel along the A143 to Scole
    • then south on the A140 to junction 51 (Beacon Hill)

    Work starts this month

    We'll soon be starting our resurfacing work on the A14 between junction 43 (Bury St Edmunds) and 47a (Woolpit). This work will also include replacing traffic signs, road markings and road studs (cat's eyes). Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface. 

    Our work will be done in two phases, starting on Monday 15 April 2024. 

    To work safely, we'll need to close the motorway and slip roads at various locations. Please remember that closure details can change at short notice. For the most up-to-date information on dates, times and locations, check our daily closures page.

    Phase 1A14 eastbound between junctions 43 and 47, from Monday 15 April to June 2024.

    We'll need to close the A14 eastbound between junctions 43 and 47, and divert traffic. Eastbound traffic will exit the A14 at junction 43 and travel along the A143 to Scole, then south on the A140 to rejoin the A14 at junction 51.

    Phase 2 – planned for early 2025. Details will be confirmed nearer the time.

This will include new road markings and studs. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer and smoother road surface.
