A12 junctions 29 to 33 maintenance

We're doing maintenance work on the A12 between junctions 29 (Colchester, Crown Interchange) and 33 (Ipswich, Copdock Interchange). The work will include resurfacing, refreshing road markings, and replacing worn-out road studs (cat’s eyes).

    Closures

    Monday 27 October to Friday 31 October 2025 (9pm to 5am)

    A12 southbound between junction 33 (Copdock) to junction 32b and junction 32A to Birchwood junction (Langham) weather permitting

    Diversion

    Diversion route for southbound A12 via junction 33 (Copdock Roundabout):

    • continue on the A14 to junction 56
    • exit at junction 56 and join the A137 towards Ardleigh
    • continue on the A137 into Colchester
    • at the roundabout, take the second exit onto St Andrews Avenue
    • continue on Cowdry Road to Colne Bank Roundabout
    • from Colne Bank Roundabout continue straight ahead onto Colne Bank Avenue/Cymleine Way
    • at Spring Lane Roundabout take the third exit onto the A12 to continue your journey

    Planned road closures, October 2025

    The next phase of improvement work we're planning to carry out is on the A12 southbound.

    We'll be closing the road to work between junctions 33 (Copdock Roundabout, A14) and junction 32b and also between junction 31 (Four Sisters and the junction at Langham (Birchwood Road).

    The road will be open southbound between 32b and junction 31. 

    Our work will include resurfacing, refreshing road markings, drainage and LED lighting upgrades. 

    To work safely, we’ll need overnight closures from Sunday 12 October to Thursday 16 October (9pm to 5am).

    Diversion

    You will be diverted as below:

    • Stay on the A14 to junction 56
    • take the A137 southbound towards Ardleigh and continue into Colchester
    • follow signs for St Andrews Avenue, then Cowdray Avenue
    • go through The Albert Roundabout and onto Colne Bank Avenue
    • at Colne Bank Roundabout, take the A133 (Cymberline Way)
    • at Spring Lane Roundabout, use the fast link slip road to rejoin the A12 southbound at junction 27
    • you can then continue your journey south

    Work starts

    We're maintaining the A12 between junctions 29 (Colchester, Crown Interchange) and 33 (Ipswich, Copdock Interchange).

    Work includes resurfacing, refreshing road markings, and replacing road studs (cat’s eyes).

    We'll work over six nights from Monday 8 September 2025 between 9pm and 5am, weather permitting. 

    Closures and diversions 

    To work safely, we’ll need the following road closures: 

    Monday 8 September and Saturday 13 September (9pm to 5am)

    • A12 junction 32 southbound entry slip road closure
    Diversion 

    You will need to:

    • head northbound to junction 33 (A14 junction 55)
    • use the junction to rejoin the A12 heading southbound, and continue your journey

    Tuesday 9 September to Friday 12 September (9pm to 5am) 

    • A12 junctions 32b to 32a southbound closure
    Diversion 

    You will need to:

    • head southbound on the A12 and need to travel through junctions 32b and 32a
    • leave the A12 at junction 32b using the exit slip road onto Ipswich Road
    • from there, rejoin the A12 at junction 32a to continue your journey
