Work starts in January 2025
We'll start work by replacing concrete bays and repairing potholes and cracks in the A11 road surface.
To work safely, we need overnight closures on the A11 between Red Lodge Interchange and Fiveways Roundabout. We'll close the road in one direction at a time while we work.
Northbound closures
Full overnight closures (8pm - 6am). Weeknights only, Monday to Friday inclusive.
Diversion
While the A11 is closed northbound, you will:
- exit the A11 south of Red Lodge and travel east on the A14
- exit the A14 at Westley Interchange onto Tut Hill/Marham Parkway (B1106)
- at the roundabout where the B1106 meets the A1101, turn onto the A1101 and travel west
- rejoin the A11 at Fiveways Roundabout
Local traffic will still be able to access surrounding villages south of Red Lodge by the A11 northbound.
The A11 southbound will remain open to traffic.
Southbound closures
Full overnight closures (8pm - 6am). Weeknights only, Monday to Friday inclusive.
Diversion
While the A11 is closed southbound, you will:
- exit the A11 at Fiveways Roundabout
- take the A1101 Mildenhall Road heading east
- at the roundabout where the A1101 meets the B1106, turn onto Marham Parkway/Tut Hill (B1106) and head south
- at the A14 Westley Interchange, join the A14 and travel west.
The A11 northbound will remain open to traffic.
If you want to rejoin the A11 northbound to access the surrounding villages:- leave the A14 at the Fordham Road overbridge and head north
- rejoin the A11 northbound and continue your journey
If you want to access the A11 overnight from Tuddenham Road or Herringswell Road, a local diversion will be in place. This will be by Tuddenham and Cavenham to join the A14 at Risby Interchange.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England site. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
Project information
Overview
Most of our road network is surfaced with asphalt, also known as tarmac, but some roads are built of concrete. These concrete roads make up around 400 miles (4%) of England’s motorway and long-distance A-road network.
The surface of concrete roads designed between the 1950s and 1970s have an average life span of 50 years. Their surfaces are now reaching the stage where they will need to be repaired or replaced
- for safety reasons
- to make them less noisy and better to drive on.
Around half of the old-style concrete roads will either have repairs or will be replaced over a five-year period. We’ll use innovative techniques and new technology to provide a modern road that will
- last for decades to come
- be easier and quicker for us to repair in future.

Benefits
Our road repairs will help improve the safety of the road surface.
It's essential for us to repair potholes and cracks to ensure a smoother and safer ride on the A11.
Once complete, we expect the life of the road surface to be extended by up to five years.
