A23 Northbound Closed Between Hurstpierpoint and Sayers Common

The A23 northbound is closed between the B2117 at Hurstpierpoint and the B2118 at Sayers Common following a serious collision. The incident occurred at 22:19 last night (16 April).

Sussex Police are leading the response to this multi‑vehicle collision, which involves serious injuries. The road was initially closed to allow emergency services to work safely at the scene and to begin essential investigative work. These types of investigations are required following serious collisions and must be carried out thoroughly before the road can reopen.

What we’ve done

National Highways has mobilised crews to support Sussex Police by assisting with traffic management and protecting the closure points. Strategic driver information signs are set across the wider network to help drivers plan their journeys and reduce disruption on surrounding roads.

There are currently no official diversion routes in place, and drivers are being directed via local roads

What happens next

Police have now confirmed that investigative work will continue throughout daylight hours today. As a result, the A23 northbound will remain closed throughout the entire morning, including the peak travel period, and reopening is not expected until later today at the earliest.

We will continue to provide updates as soon as more information becomes available. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys this morning and follow local diversion routes where available.
