Highways Common Induction

Our new National Highways Common Induction is now available for anyone who works on a National Highways construction site.

Highways Common Induction

The induction is part of the National Highways Passport Scheme, where anyone who works on one of our construction sites has a card that can be scanned to show their level of training and skills. You need to sign up to the scheme to be able to complete the National Highways Common Induction.

An improved induction for multiple sites

The induction takes just one and a half hours to complete, and covers key information from National Highways as well as the common risks faced when working on site. This short online course provides everything you need to stay safe when working on the strategic road network to get you Home Safe and Well.

Your feedback

We tested the induction with some of our supply chain, the feedback has helped us to make the course even better and showed us what works well:

“The ability to go back over a section if you did not catch everything is really beneficial as the important thing is that the information is inwardly digested and retained.”

“Once you are registered and logged in to the induction portal, which only takes a few minutes to do, it is really easy and straight forward”

"I very much prefer the new interactive version. The presenters are clear, concise and provide an excellent commentary to the mix of real life site video and animation.”

The common induction covers the key points for every National Highways site for a whole year. There’s no need to spend time taking separate inductions for each supplier. The only additional induction you will need are site specific inductions.

Duncan Elliott, Managing Director at Galliford Try supports the induction and the National Highways Passport Scheme, said:

“This latest milestone in the National Highways Passport Scheme is a significant step towards our collective goal of developing of a common structure for inductions.

"This much needed evolution in the Highways Common Induction process ensures the mutual messages and sector specific risks and hazards are delivered in an effective, consistent and inclusive manner, to a high standard which in turn will help us to reduce duplication within our own site inductions and allow us to focus solely on the site-specific messaging.

"This in turn will lead to greater efficiency, a more engaged and informed workforce and a potential reduction in incidents.”
