A27 Arundel bypass (cancelled)

Emergency area width review
In March 2020, the Secretary of State for Transport published the Smart motorway evidence stocktake and action plan. The plan included an action to review all existing emergency areas and to widen any which were less than the current standard, if feasible and appropriate.

We have listened to drivers' concerns about being able to find a safe place to stop in an emergency on all lane running smart motorways. We have been developing a programme to create additional emergency areas on sections of all lane running motorway across the country.

A rare Roman stone coffin uncovered during National Highways work on the A47 scheme in Cambridgeshire will be featured on TV tomorrow (Tuesday, 7 January) during episode one of the new series of Digging for Britain on BB2 at 8pm.
