We’re upgrading the central barrier on the A66 between the Snow Gates at Bowes and the Cumbria border. We're also adding new snow poles as well as adding and upgrading signs.

Maintenance schemes taking place in the North West region.

We’re looking at ways to carry out essential maintenance on eight bridges spanning the M6 in Cumbria.

The A66 is a key local, regional and national route for east/west journeys in the north of England providing vital connections for freight, tourism and businesses across the UK.

A number of sections of the A66 has been upgraded or bypassed since the 1970’s. We now want to upgrade the remaining single carriageway sections to provide a safe and reliable journey between Penrith and Scotch Corner.

By dualling the remaining sections of single carriageway, we will improve safety, help make journeys more reliable and support the regional and local economy.

On Wednesday 8 November 2023, the Secretary of State for Transport extended the Development Consent Order decision for the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project.

Our environment team have been busy carrying out a number of specialist surveys to gain a greater understanding of the ecology and heritage in the area.
