Press Release

Drivers in Cheshire are being advised that the A550 between Hooton and Two Mills will be closed this weekend and for three nights next week for vital repairs.

National Highways is replacing a collapsed culvert along the A550 Welsh Road between its junctions with the A41 just off the M53 near Hooton and the A540 at Two Mills. The work will mean temporary traffic lights which have been in place for several months because of the damaged concrete culvert can finally be removed.

To do all the work, Welsh Road will be closed from 8pm on Friday (25 April) to 5am on Monday (28 April).  This weekend closure will be followed by three 8pm to 5am overnight closures on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights next week (28, 29 and 30 April).

Drivers on through journeys should use the alternative M53/A5177/A494 or M53/A55 routes if possible but a clearly-signed local diversion will operate between Hooton and Two Mills using the A41, A5117 and A540.

The work involves digging under the carriageway to a depth of six feet and replacing the damaged stone drainage culvert, which crosses under the A550, with a more durable corrugated plastic pipe, providing an upgraded water flow and improving drainage. The road will then be resurfaced.

Drivers heading out on journeys can check traffic conditions before setting out on journeys. Live traffic information is always available at www.trafficengland.com or from National Highways’ 24-7 customer contact centre at 0300 123 5000. Updates will also be posted to @HighwaysNWest – National Highways’ regional feed on X.

More information on the project is available on National Highways’ regional maintenance webpage.
