Press Release

National Highways are closing a section of the A4183 Oxford Road whilst essential repair work to the bridge over the A34 at Lodge Hill continues.

The A4183 Oxford Road will be closed to through traffic from Dunmore Road to Sugworth Lane in both directions from 9pm on Sunday, 27 October to 6am on Saturday, 2 November. Oxford buses will still be able to use the route during the daytime, with a diversion in place overnight.

The A34 entry slip will also be closed to traffic, with signed diversion routes in place. The A34 exit slip will remain open, although traffic will only be able to travel south towards Abingdon.

The bridge needs re-waterproofing to prevent further deterioration, with other works to be undertaken including the replacing of expansion joints, installing new kerbs and resurfacing.

Project Manager Nick Axford said: “Every effort is being made to minimise disruption for road users and local residents.

“After careful consideration, this vital maintenance work has been scheduled to take place over half term as traffic volume is less during the holiday period. We also planned for this to be carried out over one full week in preference to staggered roadworks that would require numerous weekend road closures over a longer period of time.

He adds: "To help ease people's journeys, we are providing a free 24/7 shuttle bus for pedestrians and cyclists wanting to cross the bridge. For those planning on travelling between Oxford and Abingdon, you can avoid having to use the diversion route by taking public transport as the bus route is unaffected."

Closure: 9pm Sunday 27 October to 6am Saturday 2 November

Residents and businesses will continue to have access to the A4183 but through traffic will not have access over the bridge. Oxford Buses will be allowed over the bridge during the daytime and diverted at night.

Bridge closure diversion:

Traffic heading north on the A4183 will be diverted via Oxford Road, Vineyard, Stratton Way, Ock Street (A415), Marcham Road, to join the A34 northbound to exit at Hinksey Hill Interchange and then onto Hinksey Hill to rejoin the A4183.

Traffic heading south on the A4183 will be diverted via Hinksey Hill, Hinksey Hill Interchange onto the A34 southbound to exit at the next junction and turn left onto Oxford Road (A4183).

A34 northbound entry slip closure diversion:

Traffic from the south side of the bridge will be diverted via Oxford Road, Vineyard, Stratton Way, Ock Street (A415), Marcham Road, to join the A34 northbound.

Traffic from the northside of the bridge will be diverted via Hinksey Hill to join the A34.

Notes to Editors

Works originally scheduled for the summer were postponed following safety concerns about a nearby gas main, requiring us to wait until a utility company had carried out an inspection and undertaken repairs. Once resolved two weekend bridge closures took place, but a third was unfortunately cancelled due to a vehicle breakdown on the A34.

Planning for essential road maintenance like this, are carefully managed together with local councils.

Road users are urged to check traffic conditions before setting out on journeys - live traffic information is always available at www.trafficengland.com or from National Highways’ 24-7 customer contact centre at 0300 123 5000. Updates are also posted to @HighwaysSEAST – the regional feed on X
