New Non-Executive Director appointed to National Highways Board

After a fair and open competition, Simon Wills is to join National Highways on 3 February 2025 as a Non-Executive Director.   

Simon will be chair of the Safety Committee – a role currently held by Simon Blanchflower who remains a Non-Executive Director. 

Simon Wills started his career as a research engineer with British Gas in 1990 and since then has held a variety of commercial and operational roles within British Gas and latterly Centrica, both in the UK and Europe. These roles have included Group Health, Safety and Environment Director and Managing Director for Centrica Storage. He is currently Chair at B&D Energy and a non-executive director for the Oil and Pipelines Agency and the ThamesWey Group. 

Welcoming Simon to the Board, National Highways Chair Gareth Rhys Williams said:  

“Simon has significant safety experience in large and complex organisations. His mix of operational experience will add great value at National Highways. I am delighted to welcome him.  

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Simon Blanchflower for his work chairing the Safety Committee and look forward to continuing working with him.”  

Simon said: “National Highways has a significant role to play in people’s daily lives on our roads, and in the national economy. It is vital safety continues to be at the heart of everything we do, and I will be proud to play my part in that.”  

National Highways is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving more than 4,300 miles of England’s motorways and major A-roads.
