New and improved footbridge crossing the M3 in Surrey opens to the public

A much-anticipated footbridge allowing walkers and cyclists to safely cross the M3 in Surrey has opened to the public.
The previous Bagshot Heath footbridge, which spanned the motorway between junction 3 (Lightwater) and junction 4 (Frimley), was demolished in 2023 after engineers found issues with its ability to withstand collisions and the risk posed from high vehicles.
The new improved bridge – at 63m long, 4m wide and weighing nearly 100 tonnes – was safely lifted into place in July after months of careful construction in a British factory. Mesh and anti-climb measures were then fitted to make the new crossing safe for public use.
On Wednesday, it was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting event attended by the National Highways team, Surrey Heath MP Dr Al Pinkerton and councillors from Surrey Heath Borough Council.
National Highways project manager, Nick Axford, said: “We’re thrilled to open the new and improved Bagshot Heath footbridge to the public.
“As well as our continued work to improve the M3, we are committed to looking beyond road journeys and supporting more active forms of travel, healthier lifestyles and better local connections.
“We know how important this bridge is to the community and while demolishing the previous structure caused inconvenience, the new bridge is safer, wider, stronger and more suitable for cyclists – and we hope it will be enjoyed by everyone.”
The Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Louise Ashbery, added: “I am delighted to be opening this bridge.
“I know that local residents and groups have been looking forward to this walkway being reinstated as it provides such a useful link for walkers and cyclists. I am sure it will bring a lot of joy for many years to come.
“Many thanks to National Highways and their supply chain for a successful build and installation of the bridge.”
