Major safety boost for A47 ‘Acle Straight’

Work started today (Mon 17 March) on improvements to the A47 Acle Straight, designed to cut road traffic collisions as National Highways works to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the strategic road network.

The safety scheme features the installation of four new average speed safety cameras and associated signage along a six-mile section of the A47 between Acle and Great Yarmouth. As part of the improvements the speed limit will be permanently reduced from 60mph to 50mph between Acle Roundabout and the Vauxhall Holiday Park, on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth.

Work on the £2m project is expected to be completed by summer 2025.

Martin Fellows, National Highways Regional Director for the East region, said: “Safety is, and will always be, our number one priority, and we understand how important improved safety is to those who use this route as well as those who live nearby.

“Our work has identified sections of the A47 where we believe safety improvements can be made. These changes to the speed limit aim to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions which helps keep traffic flowing and creates safer roads for everyone.”

To minimise disruption to road users the works will be carried out on weekday nights, usually between 8pm - 6am, weather permitting. During the works drivers should allow additional time to complete their journeys. Additionally, to keep disruption to a minimum we are co-ordinating our works with planned closures required to build a new two-lane dual carriageway on the A47 between Blofield and North Burlingham.

Closures and diversions

Mon 17 to Fri 21 March - Cucumber Lane Roundabout, Brundall to Runham Roundabout, Great Yarmouth 8pm to 6am.

•    Traffic travelling eastbound on the A47 towards Great Yarmouth will exit the A47 at Trowse Interchange onto the A146 southbound.
•    Continue on the A146 to the A143.
•    Follow the A143 northbound towards Bradwell.
•    Exit the A143 and rejoin the A47.
•    Traffic travelling westbound on the A47 will need to follow the same diversion as above, but in reverse.
•    Local Diversion at Acle: Traffic can use the A1064, Caistor Bypass to Great Yarmouth and the same in reverse.

Mon 24 March to mid-May - Acle Roundabout to Runham Roundabout, Great Yarmouth 8pm to 6am.

•    Traffic travelling eastbound on the A47 towards Great Yarmouth will exit the A47 at Trowse Interchange onto the A146 southbound.
•    Continue on the A146 to the A143.
•    Follow the A143 northbound towards Bradwell.
•    Exit the A143 and rejoin the A47.
•    Traffic travelling westbound on the A47 will need to follow the same diversion as above, but in reverse.

To carry out the work safely all laybys between Acle and Great Yarmouth will be closed for the duration the works.
