£7m A5036 Park Lane work set to start
A major upgrade of a Merseyside road will get under way next month.
In autumn of 2022, the Park Lane footbridge that crossed the A5036 had to be demolished after it was struck by a tall vehicle. Since then, a temporary signalised crossing has been in place.
National Highways is investing £7 million to transform the entire junction with new pedestrian and cyclist crossings on all four arms. This includes a new crossing connecting Park Lane with Park Lane West, improved traffic signals, resurfaced roads, and enhanced signage.
These improvements are designed to support safer journeys, active travel, and better access to local amenities. A series of public information events will take place prior to the start of the work, which begins on November 8 and will run until next spring.
Following the announcement that it wasn’t possible to replace the damaged bridge, National Highways concluded that upgrading the entire junction to include new combined cyclist and pedestrian crossing points on all four of its arms will mean easier and safer journeys for everyone, including those with mobility issues.
Ian Spence, Project Manager, Scheme Delivery Operations at National Highways, said:
“Safety is our top priority, and we’ve designed the A5036 Park Lane junction upgrade with that firmly in mind making the junction more accessible, better serving the diverse needs of the community.
“We’re delivering new pedestrian and cyclist crossings on all four arms of the junction - providing safer journeys for everyone, including those with mobility challenges, pushchairs and bikes. The updates will improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists through upgraded, shared and separate routes and help keep people and traffic moving efficiently.
“We will continue to engage with stakeholders and residents throughout the project.”
Public information drop in events will be taking place this October at Park Hotel, from Thursday 16th (3 - 7pm), Friday 17th (12 - 5pm) and Saturday 18th (10am – 2pm) where residents can call in and discuss the plans with members of the project team and to ask any questions they may have.
Following an incident in October 2022, the footbridge that was struck by a vehicle had to be demolished for safety reasons. Since then, a temporary signalised crossing has been in place.
While initial studies in 2018 explored a replacement bridge, further feasibility work revealed that a new bridge would be unaffordable and would not meet modern accessibility standards, which was announced in September 2023.
Current design requirements mean ramps would need to be over four times longer than the original, making access harder for those with mobility challenges, pushchairs, or bicycles. Our upgraded junction design offers safer, more inclusive access for all.
