Project profile: Dalston Lane Tunnel

Location: Hackney, London

Status: Not open to the public

About the structure

Dalston Lane Tunnel is a disused railway tunnel that carries a section of Dalston Lane in Hackney, just to the south of The Curve Garden.

The structure is in poor condition with significant corrosion to all supporting steel and cast iron elements of the deck structure. Both ends of the structure are blocked off.

In April 2025, an assessment confirmed that the cast iron girders in the north footway and along the edge of the north carriageway failed the capacity assessment.

What is the project?

The work proposed by the Historical Railways Estates team is to infill the tunnel making it structurally safe for the future.

What stage is it at?

The project has gone through our Stakeholder Advisory Forum and we are in the process of applying for consent to proceed from the Department for Transport. We will then seek planning permission from Hackney Council.
