What is the project?
This project initially involved refurbishing both metal and stone parts of the bridges supporting Chryston Road to keep them safe for all users.
During surveys, the defects found were so significant that we're now planning to replace the old bridge deck with a new reinforced concrete deck, which will be stronger and more durable. Any damaged stonework will be fixed to preserve the structure for years to come.
As like-for-like repairs are not feasible, the bridge’s appearance will change, as detailed within our planning permission. Consent was granted in April 2025.
What stage is it at?
Work started in November 2023 to assess the extent and viability of repairing the structure. However, the nature and extent of the defects to Bedcow Bridge were worse than anticipated. Chryston Road was already closed for a housing development and the road continues to be closed due to the poor condition of the bridge.
In March 2024, further ground and site investigation works were completed to find out more about the existing bridge structure so that the design of the replacement bridge deck could be finalised.
Full planning permission for the works was granted by East Dunbartonshire Council in April 2025. Design work is progressing to allow the ordering and fabrication of the pre-cast beams, which will form the new bridge deck.
Diversion route
A clearly signposted diversion route is in place throughout the closure. We'll work to ensure minimal disruption to road users and local residents. Alternative routes are through Sauchenhall Road, Gartshore Road, Mollins Road, the B8048 Waterside Road, Market Road, Kirkintilloch, Calfmuir Road, and Muckcroft Road, which are sign posted. Please see the East Dunbartonshire Council website for more information.
