Environment

Our Environment fund is helping us operate our business in an environmentally responsible way, while making sure sustainability shapes our work from start to finish.

Environment

We have a 2050 vision to provide a road network that supports the country’s transport needs but also protects and strengthens the natural environment and community wellbeing. Read more about our Environmental Sustainability Strategy.

Working with us

We're looking to work with partners who can help us support Landscape Scale Connectivity, which will enable us to reconnect habitats and enhance the setting and connection of communities alongside the Strategic Road Network (SRN).

If you can help us realise this vision, please get in touch by email: environment@nationalhighways.co.uk.

Outside of our partnerships, we're working on projects such as:

Soft estate management processes — improve the data management and decision-making systems to improve biodiversity and other environmental outcomes on the NH soft estate

Off-network environmental improvements (landscape and urban) — improve areas of high landscape/recreational value and focus network integration on improving urban landscape character on/around our network, reduce instances of roads fragmenting communities

Nature-based solutions (including off-network biodiversity enhancement) — embed practices which involve working with nature to address climate and human-induced impacts into our work

Climate resilience (Environment Agency flood programme) — enhance climate resilience across our network and have comprehensive information on flood risks resulting from climate change, enabling increased flood resilience on the SRN and in communities

Success stories

In RIS2 (2020-2025), we delivered 1,210 schemes to support environmental benefits.
