M1 and M62 bridge maintenance schemes
We’re carrying out maintenance schemes on bridges across Yorkshire, improving safety for thousands of drivers.
How we’ll work
To work safely, we’ll need a mixture of lane and road closures. We'll work at the least busy times of the day or week to minimise disruption.
To minimise disruption to road users, we'll work overnight or maintain as many lanes during the day as possible. We’ll provide closure and diversion route information on this page.
What we're doing
We’re:
- resurfacing around 20,000m2 of carriageways
- carrying out around 5-10 concrete repairs
- installing new bridge joints
- refreshing white lining and studs
- carrying out two waterproofing schemes
- replacing around 150 traffic signs
- carrying out around 17 electrical cable repairs
When will work start?
Work will start on some schemes in April 2025, some will follow later in the year.
We'll share exact dates on this page when we have them.
Locations
Here are the locations of the maintenance. You'll also find information about when we're working and how this will affect you.
M1 Sharpe Lane
We’ll give Sharpe Lane overbridge a protective anti-corrosion barrier to extend its life.
How will we be working?
At Sharpe Lane, Our workers will mainly be out of sight in cradles. This lets them work safely both day and overnight to complete the work as quickly as possible.
We’ll also work in phases to keep disruption to a minimum.
Phase 1 - starting in April for four months
Reducing to four lanes on the northbound carriageway in the five-lane section.
Phase 2 – starting in May for three months
Narrow lanes, maintaining three lanes on the southbound carriageway.
Phase 3 – starting in July for three months
M621 reduced to two lanes southbound, opening up to four lanes on the M1 southbound in the five-lane section.
Phase 4 – starting in July for three months
M1 northbound reduced to four lanes from five for about 800 metres.
Disruption
We expect disruption especially during peak times. We’ve tried to minimise this by maintaining as many lanes as possible while carrying out the work.
We’d advise people to plan their journey and allow extra time.
We expect our work will cause some noise. We’ll monitor noise throughout and do our best to keep this to a minimum.
M62 Lingwell Gate
We’ll give Lingwell Gate bridge a protective anti-corrosion barrier to extend its life.
When will we be working?
We’ll work on Lingwell Gate bridge at the same time as phase 1 of Sharpe Lane – starting in April for four months.
We'll use a mobile elevated platform, working with a mixture of lane and full night closures.
Disruption
We'll close the hard shoulder and lane one 24/7 for safety.
We'll also use lane and full night closures to work on the eastbound carriageway.
We'll need some lane closures on the westbound carriageway to repair bridge bearings at Dolphin Lane.
We expect our work will cause some noise. We’ll monitor noise throughout and do our best to keep this to a minimum.
Project information
Overview
We’re always exploring ways to make our roads safer and ensure our network is maintained to the highest standard.
We’re proposing a number of maintenance schemes to:
- prolong the life of our network
- minimise unplanned maintenance work and closures.
Benefits
Safety is and will always be our number one priority.
This includes maintaining and prolonging the life of all parts of our motorway network, including structures and barriers.
Our schemes will protect bridges from corrosion. This will minimise maintenance work in future.
Our work will also improve the overall appearance of the bridges.
It will also improve visibility and safety for drivers, particularly in bad weather conditions.
