A66 Bowes to Cumbrian border central barrier and signage upgrades - 7 April to 8 November 2025

We’re upgrading the central barrier on the A66 between the Snow Gates at Bowes and the Cumbria border. We're also adding new snow poles as well as adding and upgrading signs

Project information

We’ll start preparing for the barrier upgrade on Monday 7 April, using daytime single-lane closures to install traffic management.

We'll start work on the barrier upgrade on Tuesday 22 April and work until 8 November 2025.

We'll work in phases:

  • phase 1 - Snow Gates to Coach and Horses
  • phase 2 - Coach and Horses to Cumbrian Border.

Traffic management

Traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day:

A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from South Stainmore Road to west of Clint Bridge (over 10.3 km)

Overnight contraflow.

Laybys

We'll close laybys adjacent to the A66 eastbound carriageway.

A66 between Cumbria and Bowes

24-hour lane two closure and narrow lanes with 40mph speed restriction.

We'll install temporary speed cameras on the route during works.

Access

We'll maintain access throughout for residents, business and communities who may be affected by our work.

We'll update this page as we work.

Please note, this is part of routine maintenance and not part of the A66 North Trans Pennine dualling scheme.

Benefits

Our upgrade will make the route safer and reduce incidents. Doing this work now means will reduce disruption in future.
