Finishing and landscaping work
We lifted all temporary traffic management from M6 junction 10 at the end of March 2024 when the final phase of our upgrade work was completed.
Since then we’ve been reviewing the junction’s performance and taking remedial action where necessary. This has included minor adjustments to traffic light timings to ensure traffic is running as smoothly as possible through the junction.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be returning to complete finishing and landscaping work around the junction. Details of upcoming overnight works on Saturday and Sunday nights for the next three weekends can be found below.
Please note that essential maintenance work, separate to this scheme, is being carried out between junctions 8 and 10 of the M6. Further details can be found on our West Midlands maintenance schemes page.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout our work.

M6 junction 10 improvement scheme opens to traffic
We've lifted all temporary traffic management from M6 junction 10.The final phase of our upgrade work is complete.
You can now use all the available lanes on the motorway and the connecting roads through the junction.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout our work.
What’s coming up?
Walsall Council is responsible for operating the traffic lights through the junction.
Minor adjustments, for example to traffic light timings, may be needed to ensure traffic is running as smoothly as possible
We'll be reviewing the junction’s performance and taking remedial action where necessary.
We’ll also return for finishing and landscaping work around the junction. Mainly we'll be working away from the road
We may occasionally need to close lanes to keep our workforce and drivers safe. We’ll reduce disruption by working during off-peak times or overnight.
Separate work - like bridge joint repairs and other maintenance between junctions 8 and 10 will start next month.

Footpath reopens
We've opened the new combined footpath and cycleway, to the south verge of the north bridge that has controlled crossing points, which is a significant milestone. This means safer journeys for pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorised users across the roundabout. A footpath was previously provided on the north verge of the north bridge, but there was no controlled crossing point at either end.
Project information
Overview
The M6 junction 10 currently experiences significant congestion and traffic delays, particularly during morning and evening peak times. Road capacity problems have been identified as one of the main transport issues facing the Black Country within the West Midlands Local Transport Plan.
The congestion includes queuing on the roundabout and the motorway slip roads, the Black Country Route and other roads leading to the junction. The improvements will ease congestion and reduce journey times for the thousands of drivers who use it every day
We're working collaboratively with Walsall Council to deliver the scheme within the current budget and to meet commitments made in our Delivery Plan and Walsall Council’s major transport scheme priorities for the period 2015-19.
We have a target completion period and are working as quickly as possible to complete the improvement work.
Benefits
As part of the improvement work we’ll:
- replace the two existing bridges with two new, four-lane bridges to increase capacity
- widen the existing junction slip roads
- improve the slip roads and approaches on the local road network
- widen the westbound A454 Black Country Route
Benefits
Provide a freer flowing network by:
- reducing congestion on the A454 (Black Country Route and Wolverhampton Road) and other roads linking to the junction
- reducing ‘rat-running’ traffic on nearby routes
- reducing queuing on the motorway slip roads
Support economic growth by:
- improving access to the strategic road network
- attracting new business and development to the area
- improving links to nearby Enterprise Zone sites and other development sites
Provide a safe and maintainable network by:
- replacing the bridges, avoiding major disruptive maintenance work in the future
- improving conditions for cyclists, pedestrians and horse-riders for crossing the junction safely
