High Speed 2 (HS2) works on National Highways network
HS2 is a new high-speed railway which will link London to Birmingham (Phase One) and then on to Manchester (Phase 2a), the East Midlands and Leeds (Phase 2b).
Phase One of HS2 has several direct interactions with our strategic road network of motorway and major A roads in the West Midlands, East Midlands and the South East. Construction of new structures, road widening and realignment of roads are required so that the high-speed line can effectively cross our road network. We are committed to working with HS2 Ltd and other partners to plan and co-ordinate our works programmes where we can.
Our roads network is vital to the running of the country and our customers and their safety remains our priority. While HS2 carry out these works we will make every effort to keep you updated and informed in advance of works to help you plan your journeys. We are committed to ensuring safety on our strategic road network and supporting a better-connected future.
These works are being co-ordinated and carried out by HS2 Ltd. For further information about HS2 you can contact HS2 directly. Details of the HS2 works on our network are below.

The A45 Coventry Road eastbound and westbound:
There will be overnight lane closures between M42 motorway junction 6 (Bickenhill Interchange) and Stonebridge Island on Thursday 8 May and again Friday 9 May 2025 between 9pm and 6am each night.
A45 Coventry Road westbound slip road and overnight lane closures:

Following these closures lane 1 will remain closed until Autumn 2025
A446 Stonebridge Road and A452 Chester Road overnight closures - 22 to 24 April 2025
HS2 contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) is to commence the next phase of works for the planned demolition of the A446/A452 Overbridge in summer 2025.
This bridge is not in use and has been replaced, as part of the highway upgrades, that will connect to the new HS2 station for Solihull.
Before BBV can progress with the demolition of the bridge they will need to undertake preparatory works.
To complete these works safely the following traffic management is required:
The A446/A452 northbound carriageway overnight closure will take place from 10pm Tuesday 22 April to 6am Wednesday 23 April 2025 (following this closure, a lane will remain closed until 20 June 2025).
This will be followed by the A446/A452 southbound carriageway overnight closure which will take place from 9pm Wednesday 23 April to 6am Thursday 24 April 2025 (following this closure, a lane will remain closed until 20 June 2025).
Access to Packington Lane during the overnight full carriageway closures will be via the diversion routes.
A46 Stivichall Interchange (Festival Island) to Thickthorn Island (A452 for Leamington and Kenilworth) closures - 11 April to 1 May 2025
As part of the HS2 works contractors Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) will be pushing a new box structure to take the HS2 line under the A46 near Kenilworth. Once the box is slid into place, BBV will complete the remaining works; resurface the carriageway, reinstate the white lines and safety barriers ready to reopen the A46.
Whilst BBV deliver the works there will be increased construction activity, 24/7 operation, overnight lighting and some additional noise. BBV will minimise the impact on residents as much as possible.
To ensure the safety of road users and BBV workforce, a section of the A46 from the Stivichall Interchange (Festival Island) to the Thickthorn Island (A452 for Leamington and Kenilworth) will be closed in both directions for 19 days.
Now the HS2 box structure is in place, the A46 on both carriageways was reopened just before midnight on 29 April 2025, which was 30 hours earlier than expected,
Currently there are two lanes open to traffic on both the northbound and southbound carriageways and we can confirm the speed limit has been amended to 70mph – which is the national speed limit for this section of the A46.
Lane one (nearest to the verge) of the A46 will be closed on both carriageways in each direction until Thursday 31 July to allow teams to carry out further completion works.
We’d like to thank local residents and motorists for their patience during the road closure. Please allow more time for your journeys whilst the lane closures are in place on both the carriageways.
Afterwards there will be two lanes open to traffic on both the north and southbound carriageways, with a speed restriction of 50mph until Thursday 31 July.
During the closures all HGVs must follow the diversion routes. Please do not use satnavs and allow more time for your journeys.
For HGVs travelling north to access Kenilworth, please continue on the A46 and leave at the Thickthorn Roundabout.
For all other HGVs travelling north, beyond Kenilworth to Coventry, please use the M40, M42, M6 towards Coventry to rejoin the A46.
For those HGVs wishing to access the A46 route southbound from the M6, please follow the M6 towards Birmingham, to join the M42 and M40 southbound.
Local diversions routes will be in place.
M42/M6 link road southbound - August 2023 until further notice
Long-term traffic management is now in place on the M42/M6 link road. This involves closing lane one and the hard shoulder of the M42/M6 link road southbound connector.
This will reduce the lane availability from two running lanes of traffic to one and will be in place from 24 August 2023 until further notice.
Harvil Road overnight closure: 28 April to 18 May 2025
The overnight closures will be in place from 11.59pm Sundays to 5am Thursdays.
On Fridays and Saturdays closures will be in place from 9.30pm to 6am.
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place via Moorhall Road/A412/A40.
Please refer to the diversion map indicating the area of the closure, noting that the diversion route involves negotiating the M40 junction 1 (Denham Roundabout) and A40.
For safety reasons, temporary traffic management will be in place. However, this will be removed at the end of each shift.
During the road closure, local access to residential and commercial properties (including the Dogs Trust) will be maintained.
NOTE: There will be no through access for emergency services during the overnight closures.
