Work continues throughout January
We’re continuing work in this area throughout January to improve driver safety and ensure the network is fit for the future. Works remain on schedule.
A38 Gloucester Road works
We need to work on the bridge joints on M5 J16 and to do this safely we need to close the A38 Gloucester Road gyratory which runs beneath the M5 at this point.
The work will be carried out in 2 phases with the gyratory being closed to northbound traffic in the first week followed by a closure for southbound traffic in the second week. We’ll work overnight, Monday to Friday only, when traffic flows are at their lowest.
M5 J14 to J17 works
A series of overnight closures will begin on the evening of Saturday 20 January to allow us to carry out preparatory works and reconfigure live lane traffic.
We’ll maintain capacity on the M5 via narrow lanes running in both directions between junctions 14 and 17.
Southbound traffic will remain on the southbound carriageway with 3 narrow lanes in place. Northbound traffic will see 2 narrow lanes in place on the northbound carriageway with a third northbound lane running in contraflow on the southbound carriageway.

Overnight works begin this month
The bridges on the M5 at junctions 15 and 16 (Almondsbury and Patchway) are now over 50 years old and in need of refurbishment. Waterproofing, surfacing, expansion joints and repairs to the concrete are needed to maintain bridge deck integrity. This is part of ongoing bridge refurbishment works by the local National Highways South West team.
We’ve organised the work to overlap with the M4/M5 dynamic hard shoulder enhancements – reducing how long traffic management will be in place and enabling our contractors to share resources and cut costs.
The M5 bridge refurbishment works have been planned to avoid the peak summer getaway season, but some preparatory work will be carried out in advance.
31 July 2023 – we’ll begin preparation works.
September 2023 – we’ll install 24/7 narrow lanes and continue preparation works which will include the construction of a crossover.
October 2023 – we’ll switch to contraflow. This will enable access to the bridge decks to begin the bridge refurbishment works. The bridge deck works will be carried out in 4 distinct phases, each one requiring a change in the contraflow layout.
