M4 to Dorset coast strategic study
We have completed a study to consider whether there is an alternative key north-south route between the Dorset coast and the M4. The aim of the study was to identify which corridor(s) could provide the main route and potential enhancements.
We have produced a brochure which details the work carried out through the study and what we found.
The Department for Transport are now considering these findings and recommendations and will set out how to reflect these in future Road Investment Strategies.

Overview
The Department for Transport (DfT) and National Highways identified the need for an M4 to Dorset Coast study.
Its purpose is to consider the case for an alternative key north-south route between the Dorset coast and the M4.
Over the last few years, we've undertaken this study with the aims of identifying:
- which corridor(s) could provide the main route through the area
- what enhancements they may need
The brochure sets out our findings and recommendations.
DfT is now considering these findings and recommendations and how to reflect them in future Road Investment Strategies.
Background
There are few north-south connections across the Southwest of England.
The present strategic road for this area is a mixture of the A36 and A46, via Bath, Warminster and Salisbury.
Local authorities in the area have suggested the A350 as an alternative corridor providing the main route for the area.
A coordinated programme of upgrades could then provide a high-quality route linking the M4 to the Dorset Coast. This would include Bournemouth and Poole, with its economically important port facilities.
Progress to date
The study aims to identify:
- which corridor should provide the main route for the area
- priority improvements in the area that can be taken forward after the dualling of the A303/A358 is complete.
An improved route would give better north south connections, making journeys faster and giving customers a safer route. It would also:
- ensure convenient access from ports on the Dorset Coast to the M4 for freight traffic
- support tourism, economic growth and jobs
- improve opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding
- improve the natural environment and green infrastructure
- improve access and environments for communities
This study identified ‘concepts’ rather than specific interventions.
Its recommendations are for locations where appropriate type, scale and design of interventions need further consideration.
They're not recommendations for a particular scheme to be progressed.
Next Steps
Government and wider stakeholders will give the recommendations further consideration.
It's expected that more work will be needed to develop more detailed options. This will inform our plans for future Roads Investment Strategies.
Benefits
Enhancements to the road network in the area would provide better north south connections, resulting in faster journey times and a safer route for customers.
Convenient access from ports on the Dorset Coast to the M4 for car and freight traffic would support tourism, economic growth and jobs.
Environmental improvements could also bring opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding and provide a greener infrastructure for communities in the surrounding areas.
