A11 Fiveways roundabout at Barton Mills to Red Lodge safety improvements

To reduce the number of accidents and improve safety, we are proposing to close up gaps in the central reservation and extend the barrier in key locations between the Fiveways Roundabout at Barton Mills and Red Lodge on the A11 in Suffolk.

    Project update, May 2024

Our proposals for safety improvements on the A11 between Red Lodge and Fiveways roundabout received a high volume of feedback, both written and verbal.

The project team presented our plans at an engagement event in Mildenhall in July 2023, and we have since collated all feedback which is being used to aid our design development process.

We currently have no plans to proceed to statutory consultation or construction this year. We are still exploring all possible options to reduce the number of Killed and Seriously Injured collisions on this stretch of the A11, and that includes further analysis of collision history.

Our assessments will continue until later this year, and we will provide an update in late 2024. It is our expectation to commence this work in RIS3 (2025 and beyond), subject to funding.

Engagement with Suffolk County Council is still ongoing. We are not proposing to commence any work associated with these safety improvements until full engagement with the Parish Councils, emergency services and other key stakeholders, as well as the local community, has been complete.

    Project update, November 2023

On 18 July 2023, we held a public drop-in engagement event at The Jubilee Centre, Recreation Way, Mildenhall, Suffolk, IP28 7HG, from 7pm to 9pm.

During the event, we shared the latest information, and answered questions about our current proposals for the A11 Fiveways roundabout to Red Lodge safety improvements. View the shared report for the A11 Fiveways roundabout to Red Lodge safety improvements.

We are now reviewing the comments and feedback we received from stakeholders and the community.

    Timescales

    • Engagement event in July 2023
    • Feedback review by us during Autumn 2023
    • Further optioneering and development work Autumn/Winter 2023
    • Stakeholder update Spring 2024.

    Next steps

Once we're ready, we will submit a Permanent Traffic Regulation Order (PTRO) application, which is the legal mechanism for implementing any permanent changes to the highway network. A statutory notice period lasting a minimum of 21 days will start upon the submission of the application. As part of this process, we will make information publicly available.

During this period, the latest proposals will be available to view at community venues: details on these venues will be available on this webpage at a later date.

The legal notices allow you to provide written comments on the proposals. If significant changes are needed after the consultation stage, we will start a new 21-day consultation period.

How do I keep up to date with this project?

We will continue to update this webpage with new information on the progress, and any changes to our proposals. You can subscribe to updates on this scheme on the righthand side of this page.

Project information

Overview

Our statistics show that the A11 in Suffolk between Red Lodge and Fiveways roundabout is a high-risk location for collisions. Most of these occur at or near the junctions of Newmarket Road North, Herringswell Road, and Golf Links Road.

To reduce the number of accidents and improve safety, we propose to make the following changes to the road:

  • closing three right-turn gaps in the central reservation barrier on the A11 at Newmarket Road North, Herringswell Road and Golf Links Road (Newmarket Road South)
  • extending the central reservation barrier at Park Farm Drive
  • improving and extending the safety barrier along the northbound and southbound verges to protect against roadside hazards
  • replacing, improving, or modify existing road markings
  • improving signs at these locations, including the 40mph speed limit signs south of Fiveways Roundabout.

The central reservation gaps we propose to close are shown in this diagram:

The number of collisions will fall, and we will improve safety on this stretch of the A11.
