A57 link roads - our work in the local community

We want to make a positive difference for communities living near our roads, especially where we’re carrying out works. Here are some of the ways we've supported local communities around our A57 link roads scheme

Schools, charities and community groups make a real difference for people living and working around our scheme. We’re proud to support them.

We want to create an impact that lasts long after our work is done.

Supporting local schools

We're helping young people learn more about careers in construction,

We want to encourage the next generation to develop skills and explore future opportunities.

So far, we’ve run careers fairs, mock interviews and assemblies reaching more than 850 students at -

  • Longdendale High School
  • Alder High School
  • Ashton Sixth Form
  • Tameside College
  • University of Salford
  • Aquinas College

Former students from Tameside College, Aquinas College and the University of Salford have joined our A57 Link Roads team.

They've been able to share their first hand experiences with current students, giving them -

  • a clear view of locally available opportunities
  • insights on civil engineering and road construction careers

We've also held sessions about construction and the environment at -

  • Hawthorns Special Educational Needs (SEN) School
  • Arundale Primary School, Hattersley

We used our Social Value Fund to help helped fund a pottery kiln for Hawthorns School to support GCSE Art and 3D Design students.

Giving back to the community

We've participated in a range of volunteer activities supporting local organisations.

Mottram Cricket Club

As part of “Get Set Weekend,” we helped Mottram Cricket Club with painting and tidying up ahead of the new season.

Willow Wood Hospice

Our volunteers helped Willow Wood Hospice with gardening work.

It also gave us the opportunity to learn more about the vital services the hospice provides. This will help us to support it further in future.

Tidying up

We've helped Tameside Council and local groups Mottram Sprucers and Hattersley Environmental Action Team.

Together we've cleaned up local areas and donated thousands of daffodil bulbs to brighten community spaces. These include the Wellbeing Garden in Hattersley, Mottram Park, and areas in Hollingworth.

The Bread and Butter Thing

The Bread and Butter Thing is a food support charity dedicated to making food accessible to people in need.

We helped the Bread and Butter Thing charity pack food orders and serve customers.

Early careers recruitment

Through our Employment and Skills Strategy, we’re committed to -

  • creating opportunities for local people
  • addressing skills gaps
  • supporting new talent in the industry.

We’ve recently welcomed three graduates and eight apprentices to our team.

One of our new digital delivery apprentices shared what joining the team means to them:

“I live right in the middle of the A57 project area, so I saw the works begin before I even knew about the career opportunities available.

"It means a lot to see the project prioritising local people. It’s making a real difference by giving young people jobs, helping them explore different roles, and showing them just how many opportunities are out there.”

Community engagement

Keeping you informed and involved in what we're doing is a key part of our work.

We've hosted a series of public information events across Tameside, including sessions at -

  • St Mary’s Church, Hollingworth
  • Stalybridge Celtic FC
  • the Mottram Show.

Meeting local people at one of our information events.

These events gave you a chance to meet our team, ask questions and learn more about the scheme.

We'll continue to engage directly with you. We'll listen to your feedback and update you about the progress we're making.

We'll work closely with local authorities and councillors to strengthen connections between our project and the people it serves.
