A38 maintenance scheme reaches final stage

A programme of works along the A38 in Staffordshire which includes resurfacing, renewing safety barriers and street lighting has now reached in its final phase.

A major maintenance scheme along the A38 in Staffordshire has now reached its final stage.

National Highways is carrying out a comprehensive programme of works between Fradley and Barton under Needwood including resurfacing the carriageway, clearing vegetation, renewing safety barriers, drainage systems, street lighting and road markings.

When completed, the scheme will mean safer and more reliable journeys for the thousands of drivers who use the route every day.

To minimise disruption for road users, several maintenance schemes are taking place at the same time to avoid the need to return to the area in the near future. The the scheme is also being carried out in phases along the route.

Phase 3 takes place between Alrewas and Wychnor and, to ensure the safety of workers and road users, will see one lane of the A38 northbound carriageway closed and the Rykneld Street and Burton Road service roads shut until 20 September.

In addition, to safely complete the work, the A38 northbound will be closed, between Hilliard’s Cross and Catholme (Dogshead Lane), on the following dates:

• 8pm on Friday 21 July to 6am on Monday 24 July
• 8pm on Friday 28 July to 6am on Monday 31 July
• 8pm on Friday 18 August to 6am on Monday 21 August

The southbound carriageway will be closed between the exit slip to the A513 and the entry slip from the A513 on the following date:

• 8pm on Friday 15 September to 6am on Monday 18 September

Clearly signed diversion routes, agreed with the local authority, will be in place.

National Highways Programme Delivery Manager, Saima Khan, said:

“We are making real progress on this scheme and drivers are already starting to see the benefits on the completed sections.

“These are essential works which are vital to maintain safety for drivers and ensure smooth, reliable journeys.

“We are doing everything thing we can to keep disruption to a minimum but roadworks do, inevitably, cause some disturbance. We are grateful for people’s patience and would advise drivers to allow extra time for journeys in the area particularly during the weekend closures.”

During closures for the maintenance work, teams from the local authorities have taken the opportunity to clear the route of litter and debris. Carrying out the work at this time avoids the need for another road closure in the future.

East Staffordshire Borough Council picked up 100 bags of litter in just one night and a total of 706 bags, weighing some 2,800kg, over a two-week period.

Lichfield collected 300 bags of litter as well as four bed mattresses, 16 HGV tyres and some car bumpers in one week.
