Littering detection trial - privacy notice
This privacy notice sits beneath our top level privacy notice and provides information about how personal data is used in relation to our littering detection trial.
What personal data do we collect and handle?
Information we may collect includes:
- visual images of faces
- visual images of vehicle registrations
What do we use the data for?
Data will be used to conduct an evaluation of litter enforcement technology to monitor, detect and evidence litter dropped from moving vehicles.
How long will we keep the data?
Data will be kept for no longer than 30 days following capture. Any data retained for evaluation purposes will be redacted of all personal data including:
- visual images of faces
- visual images of vehicle registrations
Date and time stamp attached to imagery will also be redacted.
Where will the data be stored?
All collected data will be encrypted and transmitted via a secure, encrypted connection to a protected cloud platform. Access to this data will be strictly limited to trained and authorised reviewers, ensuring compliance with relevant data protection regulations.
What legally allows us to collect and handle information about you?
National Highways has a statutory duty under Section 89 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to keep the strategic road network clear of litter.
Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it a criminal offence for any person to throw down, drop, deposit or leave litter in any place open to the air and accessible to the public, and then leave it.
Who do we share your data with?
To fulfil our legal obligations and evaluate the effectiveness of littering detection technology, we will share collected data with AECOM Ltd, a technical consultant appointed by National Highways. AECOM will undertake monitoring and evaluation on behalf of National Highways to assess the performance of the technology in a live network environment and under varying environmental conditions.
Data shared will be limited to what is necessary for this purpose and handled securely in compliance with UK GDPR.
